Is a paleo diet, that is lean meats and vegetables an unreasonable lifestyle change? Can I go from keto to paleo without dire consequences? I wish to cut some of the belly fat I’ve accumulated recently
Keto to Paleo
I don’t see why you would have dire consequences but it matters what is good for your individual body (like health issues requiring omitting items… but if you know about them, you can do it) and what paleo style you do. My paleo (it didn’t last long though I stayed very close for years) was moderate carb and vegetarian, it wasn’t ideal for me. I could do a right paleo now but it still would be worse than just staying close to carnivore and keeping my little dairy. I surely wouldn’t add back vegs as they aren’t good for me.
So many of your questions begin with ‘Can I….?” The answer will always be YES. You can do whatever you want. We all can.
If you’ve accumulated belly fat while being strict keto for long enough, that’s surprising. But hey, most of us tried various diets until we discovered keto.
You do you
No carbs just lean animal protein salads and vegetables. Switching just to cut some belly fat, then going back to keto.
Vegetables so carbs. Once I had a strict paleo day, I tracked 208g carbs and most of it came from vegs I could eat vegs, that’s sure… Obviously most people wouldn’t do that but vegetables are carby.
But why do you think paleo would help with fat-loss more than keto? It would be the opposite for most of us (okay, depends on the paleo style. if it’s paleo keto and our keto is full with cream and whatnot, it may be a good idea).
The high fat diet the past couple months has added a couple inches to my waistline. I eat low carb salads and vegetables only.
I’m just looking for opinions here that’s why my posts begin with can I and what the consequences are.
Why don’t you just reduce fat then?
But of course, no problem with some paleo with low-carb vegs, do whatever feels right, I just don’t see why it being paleo is important. Though skipping dairy is good for many people.
Dr. Stephen Phinney, a long-time researcher into ketogenic diets, says that the first thing to do in a situation such as yours is to cut the carb intake even further. If that doesn’t help then adding fat may increase the metabolism and boost fat-burning. But under no circumstances, he says, should one increase carb intake.
I have found that I can’t eat keto + high fat either, otherwise I can gain weight. Butter, in particular, has no satiety for me. I do best when eating keto + low fat, though I have been testing a TKD (eating some carbs the meal after a body weight workout).
You can do paleo, just be advised that “paleo” can get shaky sometimes. For instance, many people consider maple syrup to be “paleo”, whereas I think it’s pure sugar. We had some friends who went “paleo”, and they ate so much sugar (at least what I’d call “sugar”).
If you were to eat some winter squash, as an example, that might not be too bad.
Often, paleo does not include dairy (which is in included in “Primal”), which would be hard for me. I eat some dairy.
The best thing to do is try it and see what happens.
Thank you Paul. I realize I should give keto more time and not start changing things now.
Of course it’s paleo—for the past two million years, our ancestors have been going out to the syrup trees, fighting off the leaves and branches, and coming home with cans of syrup to share around the campfire, lol!
In reality, of course, the ratio of sap to syrup is about 40 to 1.
Since Im not having pancakes Im not having maple syrup.
Ironically enough my mom used to make pancakes from scratch from a recipe book touting soy flour as the greatest health food ever. We now know better
It’s a minor difference. No, there’s no diar consequences either way. But is this (only) to cut belly fat? Because if you can’t lose it on Keto you won’t lose it with Paleo if your diet isn’t formulated right. That doesn’t change by switching to a different WOE.
In the past when I wanted to lose weight I used to eat lean meats chicken and fish salads and veggies and low carbs (before keto) and in two to three weeks I lost the belly fat. This is the first time I’m eating high fats. So it does work for me.
But why paleo? Lean meats and not much vegs is keto too… Possibly starving, it depends how lean and how much energy one needs to avoid starvation with its problems but keto.
Don’t overeat fat, of course you can’t expect fat-loss if you eat fat galore, it’s the same with me, I just CAN’T eat much fat so it’s tricky.
But it’s fine, of course, do whatever works for you… There are very many keto styles and very many paleo styles and some are both.
@lfod14 is still right, it’s not about the big general woe, it’s about how you did it. Tons of fat - no fat loss, little fat - fat loss, it probably not about the differences between keto and paleo, it’s about fat/calories. And possibly carbs as you didn’t eat much carbs on your effective paleo either. Eating high-carb paleo probably wouldn’t be the same.
Then why are you considering switching to Paleo, and why are you gaining? Maybe I’m missing something here. Also, Paleo isn’t a low fat diet. Minus the carbs, Keto and Paleo are very close in any way that matters. On the other side of that, Keto isn’t a high fat diet minus the medical version of it. It’s a low carb diet, you fats are supposed to fill the gaps. If you’re doing the put fat all over everything version of keto, that’s most likely your issue.
“, Keto isn’t a high fat diet” that’s news to me. I probably have to decrease the amount of food I’m eating while still maintaining a keto diet to lose the belly fat.
I would think the NAME of how a person eats wouldn’t make any difference…it’s more WHAT a person is eating. You can call a goose a duck, but it’s still a goose!
All kidding aside, if you eat less fat on a Ketogenic Diet, that’s fine. I wish you the best!
