Keto shrank my brain!

(Tim W) #1

Many people blame/question if the KETO WOE caused any/all of their changes in their body.

With that in mind, I’m blaming keto for shrinking the size of my brain…

I got a call from the ENT doc a few days ago, I’d had an MRI due to hearing loss, they were checking for tumors in the ear canal etc.

The doc let me know that that I didn’t have any tumors/visible issues BUT, the tech noticed that the volume of my noggin was smaller than expected for my age.

I honestly wonder if this isn’t related to the fact that I’ve been low sugar/IF/Keto for over a year now, maybe the smaller size is due to less inflammation than normal when comparing a keto brain to a sugar brain.

Any similar experiences?

Does that refer to the volume of brain or the cranium (that’s how I use noggin ).

Are you feeling morez stoopider? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Why would your brain get smaller? Does it just bang around up there now?

Does this explain the rapid weight loss people experience with keto? Case solved?

It most likely just means it’s on the smaller side of what’s considered the norm/average. Just keep in mind, the average is composed of both smaller and larger or else it wouldn’t be an average. The brain is mostly just composed of fat and water so I doubt it was inflammef by sugars, (I’ve never heard of such a thing), but I’m open to correction from an expert.

Volume of the brain. I’ve never been too bright but now I have medical documentation to support why I’m a dumb ass! In the future, when I say something dumb or frustrate my spouse I’ll just blame my small brain!

I doubt that it actually shrank, just as Squeeyk states, it’s slightly smaller than expected for someone in my age range. Lord knows I hope it’s not banging around, I need it more than ever these days, if it’s slapping around each side of the skull and getting bruised, I’m in for a rough second half of life!

Maybe it explains that and all of the repeated questions on the forums! Folks lose brain weight and don’t learn to really use the forums!

Absolutely correct. I believe I’ve read that Alzheimer and other conditions might be caused by sugar/brain inflammation so, although my post was in jest, it would not surprise me if we didn’t lose a minuscule amount of volume once we reduce the inflammation, probably not enough to detect via MRI etc.

This is my own opinion, based on some solid science I have seen, unfortunately I can’t reference right now. I’m getting real behind on my research, I’m going to have to start taking notes. But I’m sure googling will help.

So for what it’s worth…

The Amygdala. The part of the brain that processed emotion. For people that are excessive worriers, as in people that see conspiracies behind every thought or word. People that are highly paranoid. People that are completely irrational about (pick nearly any topic, from daily news, to politics, to religion to nutrition) to the point of arguing it at the drop of a hat. The amygdala swells. It actually gets larger.

I don’t remember what the mechanical properties of this were. Maybe it was new growth (I find doubtful) or maybe it’s some kind of hormone effect causing inflammation from over use? Or perhaps it’s the normal size is said people’s, and that’s why they are such worry warts? Or maybe it’s all just BS that someone did a study on, you know, to keep getting funded. As in “you didn’t spend all of the funds you were allotted this quarter. So next quarter your funding will be reduced by that amount.” Which reads, “hurry up and spend it on something stupid. But not too stupid that it looks obvious.” Which I was actually ordered to do so twice in the USAF. Two quarters back to back I was given $60,000 to spend on my fighter squadrons computer systems. But I wasn’t allowed to by/upgrade everything. I had to “create a new project” out of the blue.

Maybe the fact that I was using mindfulness meditation while in the MRI made an impact?

The tech actually remarked that she had not seen anyone stay that still. I thought she was just being polite but, once they stuffed me in, I don’t think I moved a large muscle for the duration…

Meditation shrunk my amygdala!

You sound like you’re probably the type to keep calm, when everyone else is is running around like headless chickens.

A while back I saw a documentary that mentioned the brain shrinks with age, and the size is related to health and brain function in later life.

Unfortunately I can’t remember the source of this factoid.

However, a quick google has just revealed this link.

Although I am not sure how… um… highbrow the info is.

This needs to be made into a bumper sticker. Or T-shirt. Or fridge magnet.

In a fixed container like a skull (or a sub, maybe? ), it can make a ton of difference.
