Keto Rookie looking for input!

(Dan) #1

Hi everyone. Have been doing research on Keto for a few months now and my start date was today. I decided I would go with my intial months tracking my blood levels/blood pressure as one of my primary reasons starting was to change my diet to reduce my blood pressure. I’m 31 and last month got put on light blood pressure medication that I would like to eliminate. Today before supper I checked my stats.

Weight: 216.1
Ketone: 0.2 mmol/L
Glucose: 4.7 mmol/L
Blood pressure: 137/90 @ 78 bpm

Typically my blood pressure hasn’t been this high since being on the medication I assume it’s the increase in salt intake today.

Looking for some supportive suggestions as I have tried multiple diets and don’t stick with it or am not informed enough. I really hope to lose excess fat as well as get my blood pressure under control. Thanks for reading and look forward to hearing suggestions/comments!

Welcome. Read through some of the newbie archieves. There’s a wealth of information there.

My best advice is to make sure you leave the old low fat, calories in, calories out way of thinking behind you.

Stick to under 20g carbs per day (you can use net which is total carbs less fiber)
Eat moderate protein
Eat fat to satiety

Some people never get Keto Flu. They are the lucky ones. Don’t get overly worried if you start to feel worse before you feel better. Just make sure you’re keeping up on your electrolytes. Use the search feature for ketoaid to help with that. Others swear by drinking bone broth. I can’t stand the stuff myself, but to each his own.

Good luck with everything and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Everyone here is really helpful.

I was going to try to give you good advice, but @Anniegirl9 nailed it, and you’ll learn that you can’t argue with her.

Take some time to research the salt and blood pressure stuff, and be prepared to learn stuff that goes against everything your doctors have told you. I used to have high blood pressure (in addition to a bunch of other issues- all unmedicated). Now the only time my blood pressure goes up is when the price of pork belly goes up at Costco. @Anniegirl9, what can you do about that?

It’s a commodity. Short of putting a fix in on Wall Street, not much. :frowning:

Hope you have an Executive membership and get your 2% back.

Thanks for the reply’s! Look forward to discussing more with you two. Ya I agree with you I’ve read KETO Clarity and it basically says the same thing regarding doctors. I think the only reason mine seems higher than normal is because I’ve taken in a lot more salt and am not in ketosis yet. Once my electrolytes start flushing I will NEED to take on more. I’m interested to see what my levels are today when I check them as I was already surprised I was at 0.2 mmol/L and wasn’t even on low carb 24 hrs

Not going to lie, I read Keto Cookie not rookie so I impulsively clicked then realized lol. My bad.

Well if you find a good recipe definitely let me know!

Your not making it right. I used to be the same way. I have learned through experimentation how to finally make it good and now love it in my morning coffee.
I started with beef bones but never could make them work. Now I use chicken feet and oxtail, onions and seasonings and 48hrs in the crock pot. It took a while to get it right but was definitely worth it.

Ketoconnect.net have a good recipe for it. Or YouTube chewy chocolate chip cookie ketoconnect for a video reference.

I’ll have to check that out! I’m also finding information of people claiming that ketones make blood too acidic which forces your body to take calcium from your bones? What about the calcium you consume? Anyone else hear this statement?

(LeeAnn Brooks) #11

I’ll take your word for it. I have a pile of Keto recipies that actually look good to me that I don’t have time to make. No time to do ones that don’t appeal to me in the hopes I can get it right.

I haven’t personally heard this.

This might shed some light on calcium-

Very informative thank you for that link!

Quick update I’m on day 5 and my ketones are at 2.2 mmol/L! I was blown away to see this number and sort of gave me a boost in confidence that I “can do this”. I fortunately have not experienced any side effects and just hope that continues. I’ve been doing the easy way such as bacon and other fatty meats to get here and eventually would like to substitute some meals with more plant based fats. Again I appreciate anyone/all the people that have posted on this thread because I feel a missing link with a lot of life changes can be a support system.

Thanks all!
