Keto Resources in Canada

(Cathy Schroder) #1

I am heading to Canada from Australia this weekend to visit my daughter for her birthday. I expect to be fasting on and off while I am there but wondered if there are any Canadians here that can tell me the best Keto resources to look out for? I will be travelling from Vancouver to Calgary by road and spending a few nights in both cities.

As an Aussie living in Edmonton, if you’ve not done the Vancouver-Calgary drive before, bring lots of film/memory for your camera. You’re about to enjoy some of the most majestic and scenic countryside you’ve ever seen.

As for keto resources…not sure exactly what you’re looking for there…most grocery stores carry plenty of keto-friendly products. Superstore carries Chicarrones (pork rinds) for $2/bag in two flavours, hot and spicy and garlic that I always pack on a road trip. They also have 400g sealed packets of imported Brie cheese that don’t need refrigeration and are also good for road trips.

Enjoy your stay in Calgary. I’m actually driving there right after I wrap up this post and visiting some business cutomers for the rest of the week. It’s a pretty city, but the Deerfoot trail can be just nuts during rush hour!

Vancouver and Calgary…and in between…is full of grocery stores where you can get keto stuff, no problem. Even fast food restaurants can provide keto, like MacDonalds.

There are lots of family run businesses…like artisan cheesemakers, cured meats, etc, too. Where they raise grass-fed animals, and so on, too. Being that it is summer now, many towns have farmers markets on specific days, where you can buy these products and talk to the farmers or artisan foodmakers, too.

I’m not understanding the question…is there something in specific you are looking for?

Thank you. I’ll keep an eye out for them!

I guess I’m just wondering if there are specific brands of foods to look out for, or restaurants/chains to visit.

Beautiful sunny day here in Calgary today…

I’m looking forward to the mountains more than the city. I grew up in London but I live on a remote farm in north west Victoria now. But I’m told there’s a great park close to my daughter’s home.

Calgary has (I think) the largest interconnected system of parks of any city in North America.
…that and the mountains are just a short drive away too. It’s a lovely place.

The Deerfoot Trail is flooded tonight after some pretty heavy rain!

Yeah it was quite the storm system that went though… It should be a lovely weekend if you’re heading out to the mountains.

Back on Australian soil now. I LOVED Canada. Didn’t do too well sticking to Keto food in the end, but with some intermittent fasting and an average of 20km waking each day I haven’t gained any weight and my clothes seem to be fitting a little looser. I spent most of my time in the mountains and can’t wait to come back. Next time I’m taking a side trip to Yellowstone with my daughter.

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

P.S. Next time you are in Calgary try Gauchos! Lots and lots of amazing meat and my first Brazilian restaurant.

Been there several times…yup it’s good stuff! There’s a Brazillian BBQ restaurant in Edmonton called Pampa that’s just as good too.

'glad you enjoyed your time here. You’ll love Yellowstone too then. Actually the whole region is amazing. The Waterton Lakes area is just as pretty and a bit closer to Calgary if Yellowstone doesn’t materialize.

(SIDE NOTE) Since going keto, I’m finding that jet lag doesn’t really bother me anymore. Even for the big 12-hour daylight changes. How are you fairing?

Surprisingly well. Last time I got back from the UK it took me about two weeks to recover. I’m finding the cold here harder to deal with! Watertown Lakes is on my radar as well. I came back with sixteen books about hikes and different regions. Hoping to make it to Vancouver Island as well. But mostly the Rockies. If it wasn’t for the ice and snow season I could easily live in Canada!
