Keto reading all say not in ketosis!

(Stephanie K LENNON) #1

I have used the urine analysis strips and blood ketone strips. Everything showing not in ketosis. I’m staying around 20 carbs net carbs that is per day. I do not understand

Throw them away and judge by how you feel and a tape measure.

Blood glucose 89? I think you are right:thinking:

The pee sticks don’t always work, and when they do they’re not accurate. They only measure one type of ketone but the body produces three.

How do you FEEL in yourself?

(Stephanie K LENNON) #5

I feel good, but weight loss has completely stalled for a month

(Allie) #6

Forgetting the scale, how are your clothes fitting? The scale & pee sticks are both misleading - focus on health and feeling good, weight loss will follow. If you’re stressing yourself out over numbers on a scale, that could actually harm your progress.

I may be in the minority, but I belive in the adage “what gets measured, gets managed”. I’m an advocate of using blood meters and scales.

How long have you been eating this way? It can take days (and for some people weeks) to get in ketosis.

Too much protein can keep you out of ketosis. So can too many calories (regardless of source).

If you’re impatient or want to jump start the process, the fastest way to get into ketosis is to fast.

Too many calories can keep you out of ketosis? Haven’t heard that one, and it doesn’t match up with the science, as I understand it. Love an explanation.

(Allie) #9

Too many calories? Not sure about this. I’ve heard some say that too many cals will stop weight loss simply because it’s too much food, but if the macros are still sound, it shouldn’t affect ketone production.

I don’t track food or count calories at all, but I do measure blood ketones and glucose and the results tell me I’m pretty in tune with my body and what it needs.

I believe this statement is incorrect. From personal experience eating a 4000 keto calorie day, high fat and a lot of protein and I remained in ketosis, some of my highest readings actually.

  • Have you used a macro calculator to work out your protein levels? https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/. Remember that as you lose weight your macros change.
  • Are you using on online tool to monitor your food and watch out for hidden carbs? https://www.fatsecret.com/
  • Are you looking at NET carbs or TOTAL carbs? I personally had to keep my total carbs below 20g per day initially and then moved to NET carbs. The online tool can take care of this for you.

There are a couple of people (I believe all of them men) who have reported on their 4-10kcal experiments. There’s no doubt that some folks have greater metabolic flexibility and fewer dietary constraints.

This is a thread about a woman who is having difficulty getting into ketosis. I know from personal experience that too many calories can knock me out of ketosis. I’m a 40 something year old, obese woman. Your mileage may indeed vary.

PS: I track everything- weight, BF, calories, glucose, ketones, sleep, activity, etc. daily.
