Keto Question - Gut, Diarrhea, Looking for Hep

(B) #1

I’ve been in a low carb state for 6 months and exercise daily, sometimes multiple times a day. I box and I’ll do HIIT training. If time permits, I’ll go running.

When I began, I experienced the Keto flu very little. I consumed massive amounts of meat, cheese, bacon and progressed to nuts and mct oils. Now I intermittent fast and have a salad with 4-6 ounces of protein, all the while sipping on mct oil during the day. What I don’t understand is the inconsistency of the bowl movements. Not to mention, just recently, as I slightly bounced out (.4 mmol) I just got destroyed with the Keto flu at around day 5 getting back into a 2.0-2.5 mmol range. I feel like I’m someways I’m starting from scratch in terms of my energy levels during working out.

My main question is why hasn’t my mct oil bms either gone away, and will they ever go away? I mean disaster pants type bms.

I’m debating taking it out all together but I get pissed off because it wasn’t always like this. For 3 months, I could sip my mct oil, take my electrolytes and eat when ready. I’d go to the bathroom 1-2x a day.

Now, if I even use a little I can be going 7-10x a day. I just get completely flushed out. Unless I don’t eat anything that is. If I only eat when “hungry” and when I say eat, I mean a handful of almonds, then I’m straight. The moment I have a little more than is satisfying (not filling), I have to use the bathroom almost immediately.

My thoughts are something is wrong with my gut and I fucked it all up. My other thoughts are I haven’t been able to build a tolerance up in mct oil because I didn’t increase my intake in a systematic way. Finally, my other thought is should I eliminate it all together.

It helps me keeps my fat macros up. I like the energy. But I really want to get my gut health on track.

I’d love to hear people’s suggestions.

Thanks,
B

Perhaps you have a sensitivity to the MCT oil and rather than building up a tolerance to it, you are actually increasing your sensitivity.

Often food allergies become MORE severe over time, not less.

Not sure if this is the case, but it’s worth exploring.

Even after 1 year my MCT oil sensitivity has never gone away. Avoid it at all costs.

Other foods could be causing your sensitivity then MCT will just aggravate things.

From my experience, elimination diet was the only way to approach this. Started with all coconut oil & MCT oil etc.

You must be spending a fortune on that stuff. Try some different fats, coconut, butter, cream etc.

Thanks - Jack, I was. I cut back significantly on it. Thanks for the suggestion regarding the other fats.

Thanks - Anniegirl, definitely worth exploring.

Thanks - Allan, an original post of your’s has been awesome. You mentioned l-glutamine and psyllium husk. I reasearched and purchased last night.

This am I took a half teaspoon of mct oil before my boxing workout. No issues. Got home and had a drink with 2 tbsp of coconut oil. Then 10 g of l-glutamine. Got home from some work and had 3 tbsp of mct oil with dinner. A night cap of exogenous keystones followed by electrolytes and 10 g of l-glutamine.

I have not had more than one bm and I feel like my body is solid. I’m not worried about disaster pants.

Thank you!

Hi,

Hope things have improved.

Yes, l-glutamine is my go to when having digestive issues.

Restricting MCT / Coconut oil and also avo’s also helped.

After 1 year of experimentation I have found that removing all plant based matter has almost cured my digestive issues. Took me 3 attempts to get into carnivore as each time brought a whole different level of digestive issues as my gut microbiome adapted, each time it was easier. I also have added in milk kefir for pro-biotics. Now I only eat meat, animal fat & dairy.

I guess the point I am making is its all about personal experimentation. Took me a year to fix things, still got that last 5% to go but so close now and going carnivore has been the biggest fix so far!

I have had diarrhea for 2 months. 3 months on keto, first month was totally fine, no keto flu or digestive issues. I’m not using MCT oil or any coconut products, although I have done so before with no issues. I’m really concerned but don’t know who to ask that won’t just tell me to go off this diet. Fat intake is moderate. Should I add L Glutamine? You are saying this may help?

Just out of curiosity, what sources are you useing for your fats?
What kinds of veggies do you consume and how are they prepared?
Are you having any dairy and if yes, which types?

I find this discussion about gastrointestinal issues fascinating. I haven’t had any problems myself but I don’t use MCT oil and I consume all of my fats in combination with other foods.
I would really like to help you figure out what’s the cause of your issues.

L-glutamine helps a lot. Allan’s previous post really helped me out. Thing is to do it after you have a bowl movement. Keep in mind it might spike your glucose level. But that’s really hear say and anecdotal. The bigger issue you’re dealing with puts that worry in the back seat IMO.

Hmm. I am Type 2 diabetic so I don’t need to be spiking my BS. I’m trying to get it down with keto. Normal day is breakfast of eggs and bacon, lunch of a meat with a salad or a lettuce wrapped burger, dinner similar to lunch. Keeping dairy low, but use blue cheese dressing on my salad. Have eliminated foods a bit (especially cutting almost out cheese and dairy) to no avail. Not eating nuts too often, but they don’t seem to change anything.
