Keto question. Blood @ .4mmol/L

(Erick) #1

Hey everyone!

I’ve been doing keto for a 2 months now, I’ve lost about 35lbs. I’ve been at a stall for 2 weeks, I haven’t lost a single lb.

I purchased a blood meter last week(ketomojo). I checked my blood ketones and I was @ 1.2mmol/L 4 days ago. I’m at .4mmol/L for the last 3 days. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ll post up my diet. Blood sugar is always between 75-83.

Last 3 days. Breakfast, I have a bullet proof coffee. Skip lunch. Dinner I ate a pork chop cooked in lots of coconut oil with salt and pepper. I ate a salad (spinach, 1/8th bell pepper, 1 full avocado) with ranch dressing and bacon, I tossed in 1TBSP of MCT oil for my side. (Ranch dressing has 5 Net carbs total)

Today. Breakfast a 2 egg omelet with cheese, mushrooms, bell pepper, tomato, topped with 2 teaspoons of butter and 3 slices of bacon. Skipped lunch. Dinner, I had a salad (spinach, mushrooms, about a tablespoon or onion, 1 full avocado) with low carb Italian dressing. (10 net carbs)

Supplements. I’m taking Dr Bergs electrolyte mix. (1 scoop per day)

I don’t eat sugar free candy, any fruit, zero sweeteners for anything.

I’m 31, 6’ 295. I am a very active person. (Construction. I work for 12hrs a day 5-6 days a week)

I drink about a gallon of water a day. Sometimes I add a teaspoon of lemon juice.

The weird thing is that I have the keto urine strips and they’re always deep red when I test myself. I can also taste the ketones on my breath.

I am no stranger to low carb, I did Adkins and lost over 100lbs. I was 26 at that time. I ate about 70% protein 25% fat and 5% or less carbs. Now I’m doing 70% fat 25% protein 5% or less carbs.

Should I do a 3 day water fast?

no need for a 3 day fast imo, assuming that you’d be doing it solely for the fear of falling out of ketosis, which you aren’t, as long as you’re keeping your carbs under 20g daily. the lower readings are most likely a sign that you’re becoming fat adapted, and your body is becoming more efficient at burning ketones for fuel, hence there not being quite as many freely floating around in your blood when you’re testing for them. i wouldn’t worry about it!

You’re not doing anything wrong, your body is just adjusting to ketosis so making less ketones as it’s getting used to what it needs do.

If you have consistent all day energy and solid control of your hunger and cravings, it’s likely you are fat adapted. This means you can ease up on the fat a little so that your body has a reason to use body fat for energy. For me it meant lowering how much dairy (mainly butter and cheese) and nuts I was consuming.

As long as reducing dietary fat doesn’t lead to an increase in hunger, this might get the scale moving again without risking a slower metabolism.

Also, if you are close to your weight goal, losing becomes a lot more difficult.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I’ll lower my fat intake and up my protein intake. I’ll try that out for a few weeks.

Also two weeks isn’t a stall. 6-8 weeks without changing is considered stalling. You just plateaued off for a little. Weight loss with keto is not linear. You will drop, plateau, go up a pound or two, drop a few, level off and go through quick drops occasionally. You’re just starting out and doing better than most of us did starting out. :cowboy_hat_face:

And 35 lbs in two months is a phenomenal amount of weight loss, congratulations my friend. :clap:t2::clap:t2::clap:t2::+1:t2::+1:t3:
