Keto Pint Icecream & Keto-friendly bread found at Costco - Are they really Keto Friendly?

Hello Experts,

I started my KETO journey beginning of May 2020. Seriously following my diet using Carb Manager. normally i am low on Net carb & Protein daily limit and managed to loose 15LB so far.

Recently i got Keto below 2 items from Costco who claim they are KETO friendly

  1. Keto-friendly bread found at Costco by Natural Ovens (Zero Net Carb)
  2. Keto Pint Ice cream bar (2gm Net Carb)

I have both 1 each and noticed my weight increased a bit.

do you recommend me using these products?

I only eat real food. Processed crap does not suit me. You need to work out whether this is something that works for you or whether it is worth having. Only you can see if it is good for you.

I’ve tried commercially prepared keto bread in the past and didn’t care for the taste/texture. But that’s not what you’re asking. I find I have digestive reactions to the different types of starches they use to bring the (net) carb count down. And that could show up as bloating which would make the scale go up temporarily for me. I have tried the Keto ice cream bars and find them to be too sweet. It kind of sets of a trigger for me for sweet things, so for that reason I don’t want to eat them. I have no problem turning them down, but once I start I feel like I could easily eat other sweet things if I’m not careful. YMMV

Incidentally, now that I’ve been eating this way for several months I’ve gotten away from missing regular non-keto bread and can appreciate my own keto bread in moderation.

Ingredients

INGREDIENTS: Zero Net Carb Blend (Modified Wheat Starch, Wheat Gluten, Oat Fiber, Wheat Protein Isolate, Inulin), Water, Soybean Oil, Yeast, Salt, Vinegar, Calcium Propionate (Preservative), Ascorbic Acid, Enzymes.

No on the wheat starch, no on oat fiber, no on soybean oil. Questionable on Wheat gluten and protein isolate. Personally I wouldn’t touch it.

The ice cream bar is going to give you 10 carbs per bar because of the sugar alcohols. Other than that if you can fit it into your daily limit then it is probably ok once in a while.

I like Enlightened Ice Cream (I get it at walmart) and have it occassionally. 4 net carbs. I eat the whole pint and count it as my carbs that day and its fine… Every couple of months though as a treat.

@mtncntrykid So you count carbs from sugar alcohols like erythritol? Personally I do not. They recently changed the labeling law in the US to include sugar alcohols with regular sugar. I think it was to make things more confusing to the average person. :cowboy_hat_face:

Sweeteners affect some people’s weight-loss, I’ve read it several times. (Only net carbs seem to matter to me so I look at total carbs.)

There is no such thing as truly zero carb bread, IMO but those stuff in the shops are surely not that. A tiny portion having less than 1g net carbs doesn’t make something zero carb.
They may be okay for someone or not. It’s up to everyone to eat these or not. I almost only buy ingredients since almost a decade, some condiments are exceptions (and almost anything can happen on some days, I don’t want to be a hypocrite) but it’s understandable not everyone is this strict.

I don’t even know what is keto-friendly. ANYTHING fits my keto if I can squeeze it into my (net) carb limit. Some items don’t worth it, others do. It’s individual. Some people have problems with gluten or oat fiber or some sugar alcohols… I have problem with the stuff not being homemade, they surely use too much unnecessarily stuff or not the right quality… Maybe you are fine with them all…
Increasing bodyweight may mean nothing, it’s normal for it to change, it takes more time to figure out if there is a correlation.

I don’t recommend them, I would make my own or rather eat some proper food or snack BUT if they keep you from eating something way worse, they may be the lesser evil for a while. I wouldn’t consider them good food for keto, I wouldn’t use them freely, often, in bigger amounts… But they may have their role, be smart with them. Carbs are sneaky and you health and well-being is important, it’s not all about weight…
