Keto or Not?

(Jane) #1

That was what crossed my mind when the fit, young girl in front of me in the express grocery checkout line had 2 cartons of cream cheese in her hands…

And then…

She reached into the refrigerator case and pulled out a full sugar coffee drink.

NOPE!!!

Fascinating what people choose.

I love watching what people buy. I try not to get caught staring too intently at their carts.

Glad I’m not the only one who is interested in watching the conveyor belt as the peeps in front of me load their crap onto it! It is incredibly fascinating to me that I mentally go through my list…yes, yes, no, nope, shit, garbage, yes, no, no. And to see the contrast…motor oil and tomatoes…huh?!

I work in the office, but when we get really busy, I go out to help the cashiers. I’m always checking out what people are buying looking for fellow Keto people.

Years ago my husband and I would buy so much beer that the checkout ladies asked cheerfully: “Oh, are you having a party?”

I worked checkout in a grocery store in high school (before bar codes and when we had to know the sales tax laws to the nth degree).

I was always fascinated about what people bought even back then. I had my “regulars” who would pick my line even though it wasn’t the shortest because I had a friendly smile, knew them and waved off showing me their ID for their checks because I knew they never bounced one.

Back then (late 70’s) “real food” wasn’t taxed. 100% juice was non-taxable but the 10% Hi-C crap (the rest sugar) was.

I learned to read labels at age 16. Lawn fertilizer was taxable but if it said Lawn and Garden it wasn’t since it could be used to grow food.

Computers handle all of that now so neither checker or customer are aware of how their purchases are taxed.

Oh and it was the era of “the customer is always right” so if an item wasn’t marked with a price I would ask the customer how much it was and whatever they told me I would ring up!!

So glad I’m not the only one!
And now I wonder what people think of my food- double cream, cheese, cheese, more cheese, butter…

(LeeAnn Brooks) #11

On the flip side of this, I always feel like people are judging me based on what food I bring through the checkout.

What a prize load of bollox that was. “How can we make more money? I know let’s just lie down like a doormat and let our customers walk all over us…” Yeah, right!

When I was in college just out of HS, I worked in the intimate department of a department store with a extremely liberal return policy.

I can tell you horror stories about the things people thought was okay to return.

(Jane) #14

Actually… in the 70’s that was true where I worked and as a checker I had full authority to make any decisions to make the customer happy.

Not today!

I had one guy bring me a split watermelon he dropped in the parking lot. Not our fault but of course I told him to go get another one.

One lady wanted to stick a carton of spoiled milk under my nose to “prove it to me”. I waved her off and told her I believed her and go get another

No bar code scanners for inventory control so I didn’t have to do any transactions at the register. Just waved them on as they walked out the store with their replacement item.

Simpler times.

Kohls has found that the repeat business, and liberal return policy is financially worth it. There are always those that take advantage and feel entitled. Kohls isn’t generous, it’s not personal, it’s business.

When you have to take back bloody undies, you gain a different perspective.

And no, I’m not kidding.

Same!
Love cart stalking.
Getting caught is fun though😄
In line at the checkout
Great conversation starter for the “ most “ part.
“ oh is that any good “…” what’s for dinner tonight “

Just bcuz one used the food seperator bar gadgets …that does NOT mean, all talk about food choices is off table

(Empress of the Unexpected) #18

Oh, that’s what they’re called!!
