Keto not working for me

(Carol E. ) #41

Well said. These two things should be required reading. :+1:

@Rookie, You mention your macros and they seem to be in line but, you don’t mention how many calories you are eating.
I used to eat NSNG (no sugar, no grains) and was not losing weight. I called Vinnie Tortortorich for a consultation and he figures out that the fat I was eating was totally feeling my fat fuelled body. My body never needed to go to my fat stores so I wouldn’t lose any weight.
Once I dropped my BPC (I was using to much HC) and started losing.
Maybe we could get @carl to interview you on the podcast since there are so many people on this post that are in the same boat.
The other thing I don’t think you mentioned (I may have skipped past it) is how much you have to lose. On a good week I can lose 6 pounds. My Wife has lost 11 pounds over 3 months because she has a lot less to lose.
Just some thoughts.

John

John, I eat around 1200 daily but I don’t really follow calories…I use mfp so they track me around 1200. Maybe I need to lower calories?

#44

And I use a lot of heavy cream, so I’m going to go dairy free starting tomorrow. Maybe my body gets too much fat so it doesn’t need to access its private stash. I’ll report back

#45

I’m 155. At 18 I was 120 and was very comfortable in my own skin. So 120-125 is my bullseye :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow. That is not a lot of calories.

I don’t believe fully in the CICO model but I do believe that when you don’t give your body enough energy (either from your body through fat adaptation or on your plate) your body will start to scale back things.
I used to be in a brain fog, sleepy all the time and irritable when I restricted calories. My Testosterone dropped to that of a 12 year old girl (my specialists’ words). It took me 5 years to get myself back in order.
My Wife who is 52, 5’ tall and 114 lbs has a Basal Metabolic Rate of1200 calories. This is supposedly ihow many calories she expends to maintain if she were in bed all day doing nothing.
Like I said, I think BMR is only a guideline but, I would wonder if your body has just adjusted to burning less calories.
I’m not sure how this plays into fasting because you’re not eating anything then but maybe someone with a bigger brain could chime in.

#47

I have done 1200 for the major part of my adult life because of the cico mindset I was indoctrinated with. I never thought to change that. I’ll have to investigate. Thanks.

You may want to start here. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bmr_calculator.htm

#49

Wow, my basal rate should be 1333 calories? I wasn’t eating enough? For a long time? Does that mean my body is in starvation mode, my metabolism is dead, and why I only lose weight when I extended fast because it thinks it has to burn fat to live

I’ve been cramming Amy Berger’s blog on Tuit Nutrition and she teaches the same things all you have for stubborn fat loss. I have so many things to try!!!
Dairy restriction and protein cutting are first starting tomorrow (and I’ll be eating a few more calories, too). That will be enough new for this week.
Next week I’m fasting because my grandkids will be here during the Zorn fast. I’m hoping to be part of that in February. Thank you all for your tips, tweaks, and your time. I’ll let you know how it goes :stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue:

Perhaps and perhaps not. You can do an experiment. Lower your fat for 30 days and see what happens. It wasn’t the solution for me. I needed to lower my protein and up my fat in oder to continue to lose plus do more fasting. I’m a diabetic post menopausal woman so the fact that I was able to lose 80 pounds is something like a miracle. These last 20 pounds aren’t going to be as easy but I’m in this for the long haul. Best advice I can give you if it isn’t working adjust one thing that you are doing, if it works great if not something else

#52

That makes a lot of sense. I should probably do one thing at a time to rule things out

(G. Andrew Duthie) #53

Yes. It takes longer, but it’s much easier to know which levers work for you if you only move one of them at a time.

#54

Because I have so many autoimmune issues I think I will try to eliminate all dairy as my first tweak. Thanks

It seems like calories are really low over the course of a week. You say you fast for 24 hours, 3 days a week and 18/6 most of the rest of the week at about 1200 calories?
I’ve always heard to eat at maintenance on non fasting days. Not to cut calories in addition to full day fasts. And you’re getting a good 30 minute walk everyday too. ?!?!
Being that you’re T2D I honestly wonder if you’re stressing your body so much that you’re overproducing glucose.

(ketohealthclub) #56

Exercise can also help you to become keto/fat adapted, so it’s good in that regard as well.

(Kerri Hines) #57

If you’re in the US you can get a free meter with the purchase of strips from this link.

It’s a glucose reader as well.

#58

Could be :). Also insomniac so my cortisol could be a factor. I’m a mess

#59

I’ll have to look into this…thanks
