Keto Issues - Need help!

(Mitch Myser) #1

Hi Dr. Berg, I’ve been watching some of videos and find them very informative. The reason I’m messaging you is I’ve started the keto diet almost two weeks ago. For most of my adult life, I’ve had many stomach issues that have gotten worse over the years. Doctors have tested me for everything under the sun and all they can say is IBS. I have issues with dairy, gluten, most fruits, fiber(veggies), coffee(all forms), alcohol, most sugars like stevia and xylitol. Most foods react poorly. I get bloated and back pain. I’m 6’0" 217. I’m definitely over weight. I’ve been doing CrossFit and started keto. I want to lose weight and heal my gut. I also deal with heart burn.

The problem lies with with keto. I feel as if my stomach is getting worse. I’m dealing with bloat and some pain. I’m drinking 150oz of water and I’m making sure my electrolytes are high. I’m currently at a 75/20/5 macro ratio. My wife and I are slowly migrating to grass fed meats and eggs. Currently I eat 4 egg whites with 4 strips of bacon, 1 cup of broccoli and 1 cup of cauliflower cooked in bacon fat. Some times I add 85% ground turkey. I have eat fat bombs with cocoa butter coconut oil and sunflower butter. Some times I’ll have a snack of sunflower seeds. At night I’ll have chicken with cucumber or other meat. I unknowingly am following intermittent fasting.

The problem is I am always bloated. It could be the transition phase but it feels like something else. IDK what to do. I want to succeed with this diet but my system is all messed up. It had been for a long time. Insulin resistance?

I appreciate any help.

Wrong place to contact Dr Berg. Maybe edit the copy/paste?

I don’t have much experience of this and it sounds like you have serious issues regardless of keto. I would search for AIP (Auto-Immune Protocol) Diet where you remove all potential allergens and then reintroduce them one at a time to see what does what to you. You can do this and do basic keto at the same time.

This was an interesting experiment in AIP by a couple on keto…

I guess you’ve had all the food allergy tests (for what they are worth). Others have done elimination diets to work out what roils their guts. It also takes potentially a LONG time to reverse gut damage and rebuild a healthier biome so you may just want to press on.

Given your history, I would probably opt for AIP…
