Keto in a Crisis

(Crippie) #1

A little bit of a rant, but I know anyone who has recently been in one of the many disasters around the country can relate.

Trying to stay keto for a long period of time in a crisis is HARD! Sure if its a couple days or so just fasting could work. But after having evacuated on Monday due to the California firestorm and being out of home for almost an entire week, it has been rough. Almost all the food at any shelter is just full of carbs, any donations are full of carbs. Had I had time to prepare it may not have been bad, but rushing out of your neighborhood at 2am while embers rain down is not ideal for meal prep.

Luckily some of my family has been unaffected and has been able to help out, but most of my family and friends say that its a disaster time and to throw the diet to the wind. Which sounds all good and well, but during a time like this I don’t want to feel tired, or bogged down, or foggy. I want the mental focus and longer endurance that keto gives me access too. Eating carbs would make me feel sick, which is the last thing I want right now.

Anywho, rant over. Any tips or tricks appreciated. Been surviving mostly off a large pack of salami and string cheese I bought at a store, and a large bag of almonds.

So sorry you are having to go through this. I doubt many of the others here have been through a long evacuation like you are experiencing. I certainly can’t imagine it.

My only suggestion is to select a few items that are higher carb than your norm and just supplement the salami, cheese and almonds with that, along with maybe a one meal a day type IF?

Just wanted to wish you well and hope you can get back to normal soon.

Thank you!

Yes IF has been a lifesaver, fasted the first couple days, then went to IF so I only have to worry about 1 meal a day.

Thanks for the tips and thoughts

Whole Foods is supposed to have Brain Octane (MCT Oil). I have the luxury of not being evacuated yet. I have a Go Bag ready with Brain Octane, Cheese Crisps (Trader Joes), nut butter and salami and Cheese. I could live happily on that for weeks if I had to.

Thanks for the Tip. I may try to get some, if I am back down that way, currently a little further north and avoiding heading back down anytime soon. The MCT oil I had before never sat well on my stomach, but could definitely help and I know my wife would appreciate it as she seemed to handle it without too much stomach issues.

Obviously, I haven’t been in your situation, but as someone who doesn’t like to cook, I can share my no cooking required go-to items. Things that are widely available, and can be easily be bought on your behalf by someone else.
Canned foods like tuna, sardines, and chicken
Beef jerky
Nuts, seeds, and trail mixes consisting of these
Pork rinds
Deli meats
Pre cooked bacon
Block cheeses
Salads

Hopefully others can add to the list.

I feel your pain! Having lived through the 94 Northridge earthquake and being evacuated twice for firestorms from our home I can definitely relate, however I wasn’t keto then. None-the-less after the earthquake finding any food or water was difficult as grocery stores were piles of rubble as well. Without power, water and gas meals were difficult at best so I can relate.
Do you have stores near enough that have not been burned down as well and transportation? If you do, my suggestion is beef summer sausage almost no carbs and doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Beef jerky in a pinch.
Salads in a bag and a bottle of ceasar dressing. Hard boiled eggs? Some stores sell them already cooked. Raw veggies? Dip them in your Caesar. I haven’t tried already cooked bacon but you might check that out as well. Packaged tuna, smoked oysters?
My heart goes out to you and your family. You WILL get through this. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Your situation reminds me of hurricane evacuation. It brings to mind lots of canned meats, Vienna Sausage, potted meat, sardines, herring, tuna, etc. Wishing you the best and hope you can go home soon!

Let’s meetup at Acre Coffee. I’ve evacuated twice due to the fires. I chose to fast Monday after we evacuated and then kept it up until yesterday. I focused on grants first but would love to have a Keto lunch with someone to get back on track. I’ve also been wondering the best way to get my cortisol down after the daily horrors we’ve been going through.

My other Keto friend evacuated to her hometown of Vegas and we’ve been texting.

Thanks!

So sorry = prayers and blessing for you and yours.

@Cailynq @Cripple Just sharing some solidarity with fire evacuees here. My family is with me (four hours from home in Santa Rosa) and tomorrow we return to their house, which thank goodness is still there.

Just wanted to say I understand – it’s rough. As far as keto, do the best you can and don’t look back. Lunch meats and cheese are your friends if you can get them.

@gatita thanks for the cheery support! We are so glad almost all of the evac orders are lifted.

I’ve been exhausted from the stress and sleeping a lot. Hoping today will be less stressful as we finally got a good dose of dog, which should knock down smoke. And possibly rain tomorrow or Friday!

Hope your family gets home safely🙏🏻

Thanks for the support @gatita I luckily got to go home earlier this week, I too was also very very lucky and my house and neighborhood was relatively unaffected.

Evac area for my work place was lifted and am back today in Santa Rosa, its unreal.

I know the feeling. Sleep has been scarce, even being back in my own bed, just that smell of smoke and the on edge feeling has yet to subside. The fog is nice, and the rain tomorrow should be amazing.
