Hi I need some advice regarding the ketogenic diet to diabetes and people with high cholesterol.
I have previously tried the ketogenic diet and lost one stone of body fat,Which I hit my desired bodyweight. My question is about my father, he is over-weight and needs to loose aprox 5 stone over the next 1/2 years. I Originally talked him into trying the keto diet as it worked very well for me, but my Only hurdle is that he has high cholesterol and diabetes. would this be a problem as when I was doing the diet myself I ate allot if eggs and dairy.

It would be great to hear a response at some point
Thank you for reading

It should not be a problem. High cholesterol is generally from overeating carbs. A good keto diet once he is adapted should result in eating less and the food being absorbed better and not turning to high cholesterol. Include some mono like coconut and olive oil as well as the saturated fats. But n=1 so good luck.

Hi Jayden, seems you’re quite new to the forum as we love keto here specifically for its ability to help folks like your father. Please read the FAQ section and listen to some of the dudes podcasts.

Short answer- yes, it’s fine. Tell him to join us here for help

LCHF -> Keto is a cure for diabetes.

So not only is Diabetes not a problem for Ketogenic eating … the people who benefit the most from this way of eating are people with diabetes !

The main thing to watch for is low blood sugar when you drastically reduce carbs … especially if he takes glyburide or insulin. Metformin and Januvia or invokana are less of an issue with starting keto and the risk of hypoglycemia.

Keto helps diabetes incredibly. As for colesteral, studies show that high total colesteral and high LDL are not correlated with cardiovascular disease.

Instead cardiovascular disease is correlated with inflammation and small dense LDL, both of which are reduced on a ketogenic diet.

Check out the podcast at 2ketodudes.com and especially listen to the colesteral episode and the two diabetes episodes.

Hi similar to me then … I weighed in at 23 stone when diagnosed with Type 2
Now weigh 15 stone with "normal HbA1c levels of 29 (4.8) at last test.
So yes its fine to do keto when diabetic… in fact it’s hugely beneficial.
Just watch out if your dad is one blood sugar lowering meds as he’ll need to cut down to avoid hypoing.
As to cholesterol well that needs some research but for me my ratios are great so even though my total has gone up I’m not worried.
In fact I don’t worry about cholesterol levels anyway…
