Keto flu and fat adaptation

(Becky) #1

Good morning all, hope everyone is well! I just wanted to share a couple things as well as ask a question. First off i have got to say that this WOE has changed my life. I half heartedly started in January but really went all in around the second week of February. Since i started i have lost…oh gosh as of this morning i have lost an even 40 pounds…i am finally under 200, i cant remember the last time my weight started with 1…i struggle with a mental block and felt i havent made any progress visually. Thankfully i am dear friends with a woman who is more head strong than i am. she dragged me kicking and screaming to a clothing store and she began geabbing clothes i had only ever dreamt of wearing…i walked into the dressing room wearing a 2xl shirt and an 18 stretch pant, thanks to keto i walked out in a size L shirt and 14 pant. This has been a blessing, i have even gotten my son to agree to trying this way of eating until april when he graduates high school. He plays sports is 6’3 285 pounds, so i feel like this would be so beneficial for him (he is nervous about his tux for prom). My little girl is 7 and pretty much thinks what we eat is the norm, but she has the opposite issue, shes really short and barely 30 pounds lol so the only one i still need to get on board is my hubby but thats gonna take some more convincing. Ok, sorry for the rambling, now on to my question. Ive heard lots about keto flu…does this happen when you start the woe or when you become fat adapted?

It can happen whenever your electrolytes get out of balance but for most people who get it (not everyone does) that happens in the first few weeks.

Just make sure that you are having way more salt than you are used to. Some people need up to two teaspoons a day on keto. If you start to feel dizzy or nauseated or weak have some right away. Also drink plenty of water.

@Ilana_Rose I still get Keto Flu symptoms after 6 months in the evening if I have slacked on salt that day. Easily fixed by swallowing 2-3 grams of pink rock salt with a BIG glass of water. 15 minutes later it’s like it never happened. I have just learned to listen to my body whenever I get cramps or a headache salt is my go to. :cowboy_hat_face:

My husband is exactly the same after two years whereas I’ve never had it. It’s pretty rare now, but from time to time he’ll still get a bit lightheaded. A 1/4 teaspoon of salt with water has him right as rain in about ten minutes, however.

I’ve never had keto flu symptoms but I do still find
that my workouts go way better if I have some salt an hour before.
