Keto diet on 4 year old autistic girl

(Paul Vladimirescu) #1

We started keto diet and my autistic daughter started stimming again. Then we found out she has severe eggs intolerance(also milk). So we took the eggs out, it’s almost a week, but the stimming behaviour doesn’t go away. ???

Stimming is natural for people with autism, it is relaxing and soothing for many, helps them deal with under/overstimulation. Unless she’s hurting herself with her stimming, there’s no reason to get her to stop it.

I agree, there is nothing, I mean nothing, no diet, no pills, no therapy that will stop stimming. It is a way autistic people deal with their emotions and their vestibular balance. I think keto is great and I wish my son would eat it. I am keto and loving my results. I think if you continue keto you may need to change your expectations and focus on some if the other benefits of it like more mental clarity.
Depending on how high functioning she is you may be able to teach here where is it ok to stim like at home versus where is better not to like at library.
My son is autistic and 14 and he stims all day everyday. It is a big part of who he is and I have come to embrace it.
Work with the school or applied behavior therapist to modify behaviors, but unfortunately stimming will never be one of them. I also am a psychotherapist who works with special needs children and does behavior modification for a living, so if you need anything, advice, shoulder to cry on, let me know.
As a special needs mom I get it completely, it is a hard road we travel on that few understand.

Hi, two of my children are on the spectrum and I know my little one doesn’t love change (including dietary), could she be stimming more to cope with the stress of the change itself? Wish you and your little one the best!
