Keto Diet Newbie & Mini Pill (Desogestrel)

Hello everyone!

I’ve recently started the Keto diet and so far I’m loving it! Although, I did wonder if the sudden reduction of carbs could have any effects on my birth control? I’ve heard many say that estrogen and other hormones are stored in fat cells and released into the blood stream when you’re entering ketosis — haven’t found a medical study that covers this topic yet.

So my question is: Do I have to worry about the progesterone in my mini pill being metabolized differently than before and therefore being less effective as a contraceptive pill? I’m worried because I started spotting again this cycle after having a heavy break-through bleeding mid cycle (guess that’s because estrogens are lacking). I’m considering taking another pill soon, a combination pill.

If any of you have had similar experiences, I would be really happy and thankful if you could share your stories and advices!

P.S.: My boyfriend and I haven’t seen each other in a long time due to being quarantined. I doubt that I’m pregnant because I’ve taken a pregnancy test two weeks ago just to be on the safe side…and it was negative. I’ve waited a month to take the pregnancy test, so I did not test too early.

Thanks for every answer, have a nice day!

This is the pill I use, no side effect from me at all with keto or with higher carbs.
Though to be fair, I do have a progesterone deficiency so that pill has been an incredible boon to my life, with many positive side effects that keto did not alter in any way. I don’t know why you’re taking that specific pill, so I can’t tell whether your reaction might differ. But personally, it didn’t change a thing.

Our hormones go slightly out of whack when we start out but shouldn’t be anything crazy and correctly pretty quickly, especially with an orally taken one. It would have a more noticeable effect (if any) on endogenous production. I’m a dude, but supplement with Testosterone and HCG and have many tests done yearly on those as well as my Estrogen since I keep my levels on the higher side so I need to be aware of that as well. I’ve done a LOT of different things in my diet from starting out until now and never noticed any changes that were enough to make me change anything I was doing.

Welcome to the forums vxsual.

I think this is a question your dr. who prescribed the pill for you should be asked.
We are all so different, what can do wonders for one of us, would make another ill.
Hopefully someone can give you some feed back on what their body did with it.

Good luck on you keto journey.
