I’m into my fourth week on Keto and things have gone really good so far. After about 4 days the cravings for sugar and other bad things just seemed to disappear. I haven’t tried any of the Keto desserts that I find recipes for until yesterday. I had a very small serving of Keto chocolate cake. This morning I woke up feeling like I was absolutely starving which has not happened at all up to this point. Could that dessert have caused that? I’m curious is others have had hunger or had those cravings return after having a dessert
Keto dessert
Thanks LJ. I definitely going back to no dessert I can see where that could cause problems that are completely unnecessary
Yup. If you can do without sweets entirely your likelihood of success on keto goes way up. Artificially sweetened foods just leave me with neverending cravings and thinking about eating all the time.
Thanks llana_Rose, I am definitely convinced that you’re right. Up until today I have woken up and had a cold glass of water and ready to start the day. This morning was much different. The only thing I did different was having that dessert. I won’t even bother looking at those recipes again
Desserts do the same to me…i eat way more than I should, they mess with my satiety signal, and I really am hungrier for the next few days.
Looks like desserts should come with a big warning label saying it’s okay to eat this but beware of the cravings and hunger you will experience afterwards.
This seems to be a common thing, but I wonder if anyone has the opposite impact? Or rather, the treat does not seem to be a trigger? I had a little Rebel ice cream last night and I do not have any cravings this morning. Maybe it is the specific type of sweetener? Sounds like some bother some people more than others might.
@Relic One of the smartest things you can do for yourself is lose the taste for sweet. If you cater to it you will only prolong the misery.
Definitely, we are all different and some people don’t have a problem with desserts, some are bothered by specific sweeteners, etc.
Not doubting that some others seem to have a problem with artificial sweeteners, or even natural sweeteners like Stevia. Definitely not a problem for me. I use several packets of Splenda in my coffee every morning, and my GF uses Splenda in our fat bombs and other Keto deserts too. In spite of this, I can totally go LONG periods of time without eating, after my Splenda sweetened coffee… and after a couple Splenda sweetened fat bombs, I can go 6 more hours without any food cravings at all, plus, when I do get hungry, its not for more fat bombs, but maybe a 20oz Ribeye
I honestly don’t “crave” sweet sugary foods anymore. But I certainly still enjoy it between a lot of healthy Keto meals Keto killed my addictive cravings for sugar, but it has not killed my enjoyment of occasional sweet treats
I had to eliminate all sweeteners a while back (early June) as well. They were messing me up and making me feel hungrier, and so at that time I started making Fat Bombs omitting the sweeteners, then no Fat Bombs. The rest I had in the freezer my hubby ate up (even though he is not on Keto).
If you want a “treat” you can buy some MCT flavoured powder and boil water and have that, or put some in Coffee or Tea.
Or, what I used to do if I wanted a treat but didn’t want to mess up, I would take a bit of cream cheese, and add maybe 4 frozen raspberries, and then stir it together and have that as a desert. The raspberries do have natural sugar, of course, but if you keep it to 4 and count them in your macros, it is a treat without cheating.
There are several possibilities:
-
Even though “keto,” the cake contained enough carbohydrate to make you feel bad.
-
The artificial sweetener in the cake caused your insulin to spike (every artificial sweetener seems to do this to someone, but thank God that none of them does it to everybody).
-
The “artificial” sweetener actually contained some sugar (the Truvia brand and the In the Raw brand both have versions that are 50% sucrose, and sometimes you have to read the fine print to figure out which version you’re looking at, so don’t blame the cook too badly).
-
The sweetness had no physical effect, but it stimulated cravings.
If you do some cautious experimenting, you might be able to figure out what really happened, or else you could just be careful with sweets. I am a sugar/carb addict, and I crave sugar, even when completely satisfied by my ketogenic diet. These cravings are completely distinct from hunger.
I know a couple of sugar-free cheesecake recipes, and while actually eating a slice of one of those cheesecakes doesn’t make me binge, there is always a little voice in the back of my mind, urging me to make a cheesecake, or to just go to the local bakery and buy one (which would definitely not be sugar-free!). Fortunately, I know not to listen, but it will most likely take several years for it to shut up.

Thanks, Susan. I’ve been getting your call-outs too, just been working in the yard since getting home, so didn’t see them until I got back in. Thanks for keeping an eye out though, much appreciated. … Plus Marie has a large fly-swatter she’s breaking in.
Hehe, sorry I just tagged both of you and Carol pmed me too, so I had all three of you aware. I knew Ruina was asleep, but last night she caught one (the same initial one I got earlier today). Then this same guy did two posts. Hopefully they give up soon and leave our lovely forum alone =-).
