Keto dangerous?

(Kristen) #1

Sorry, I know I post a lot but I have another question. I started keto about 5 weeks ago. So far so good, but yesterday I suddenly lost my appetite and have to force myself to eat. Last night I got really sick and threw up. Today, I feel the same way, so sick and no appetite. My body hurts, and I’m just have a stomach ache. I don’t think it’s keto flu because I regularly maintain ketosis, and to my understanding keto fly usually happens within the first few days.

I’m nervous because I just feel so sick. This is the first time I’ve felt this way, and generally speaking my keto diet is great. Veggies in fat and some kind of protein. I don’t want to make myself eat if I’m just not hungry but I’m scared it’s forcing my body into starvation mode/losing muscle mass or somehow I’m damaging my body. Can someone please provide insight?

Maybe you are actually sick with a virus or food poisoning?

Your problem may have been you forced yourself to eat when you were not hungry. You may have lost your hunger as a side effect of becoming fat adapted. I haven’t been “hungry” in the conventional sense of the word, since 10/31/2017.
Dont force yourself to eat. listen to your body’s signals and eat when hungry. Problem solved.
Your body is the product of millions of years of evolution - do you really think if you listen to its signals, it will let itself waste away to nothingness?
Make sure you are having enough salt, and drinking enough to not be thirsty. Then eat when hungry. Eat till full. Don’t eat when not hungry.

DONE

This is the season for illnesses too. There’s a stomach virus being passed around my BFs work and there’s always the possibility of food poisoning. I wouldn’t immediately think it’s the diet itself at this point. If it continues, I’d see a doctor in case it’s a serious food poisoning issue like E. coli

Not accurate. It can happen anytime your electrolytes are out of whack, but sounds more like you have a virus.

Never force yourself to eat when you’re not hungry. One of the reasons keto works so well for weight loss is the way it reduces appetite and just because you’re not putting food into it, that doesn’t mean it’s not eating, it’s just busy eating it’s own stores.

Doesn’t sound keto related. Keto is just the avoiding too many carbs (which is >20g). That can’t be the cause of such an upset belly.

With or without keto - any medical professional will tell you to drink plenty of water if you can’t eat. And that’s water not juice…

Are you able to drink water? (and hold it down?). It’s vital you have the water.

Otherwise a will formed ketogenic diet does not burn muscle or other tissue. It’s just about burning stored fat, which was saved for a “rainy day”.

I’d see a dr and receive some medical advice.
No one should be vomiting or in this much pain on keto. I’m worried for you. I hope you feel better soon.

How are you feeling now? Any improvements?

Generally between 5 and 6 weeks you become fat adapted. One of the biggest parts of fat adaption (goals!) is loss of appetite. Don’t force yourself to eat, that’s possibly what made you not feel good.

Though it also sounds like you may be simultaneously coming down with an actual flu. Take it easy for a few days, but don’t force yourself to eat.

I agree, it sounds like you’re getting sick. Regardless of what diet you’re on, when you start vomiting or are at risk for not being able to hold fluids down you should see your doctor.
