Keto Coffee questions

(Samantha ) #1

So I have been drinking keto coffee since starting this journey three weeks ago. I drink my coffee all morning long and it is one LARGE iced coffee I make myself (18oz). Is it okay to take four to five hours to drink it? I know we are supposed to have three meals and no snacking…but does the fat content in the coffee throw off my diet between breakfast and lunch? I drink my coffee starting at 8am…have breakfast around 9…drink coffee until 12 or 1 pm and then have lunch around 1. Dinner is then not until 7ish or later if i work out with only water in the 6 to 7 hour time block.

I just want to make sure that it is not messing with my Keto diet since I have only lost 2.5 lbs in three weeks. :frowning:

It is an excellent question, and something that most people don’t consider.

First, there is ALWAYS something that we can tweak, if we want to take the time and energy, to improve our daily eating or fasting patterns. So, even if it doesn’t relate to coffee, it’s good to think about it like you have.

Secondly, I wouldn’t look at this as a likely culprit, unless you are adding spoonfuls of sugar to your coffee. Neither coffee or butter or oil of some sort are likely to spike your insulin much, even if spread out for part of the day. And, you may not have concerns about insulin spikes.

Thirdly, if you worry about it. You can always experiment with a different pattern, and see if that improves the results that you are looking for.

Fourth, don’t be so hard on yourself. Times of fat loss come and go. Time of muscle gain or loss come and go. What is important is to establish patterns and be aware, as you have been. You’re doing the difficult part correctly, and the weight loss will come at some point on it’s own.

I gained four pounds my first three months, before I started dropping weight quickly.

It’s good to see you taking the roller coaster ride, and reviewing it to see how different things effect it.

Keep up the good work.

What @tdseest said.

Before Keto I drank 2 mugs of coffee first thing in the morning and that’s it. Since Keto I began to crave it, so added an afternoon coffee session (the Bulletproof kind).

I drink it before breakfast then after lunch, sometimes until dinner, and don’t think it slowed down my weight loss or “knocked” me out of ketosis.

Again like Tom said you have to tweak and see how you respond.

My one question is are you substituting coffee for water? Want to ensure you’re still getting plenty of plain water ( IMO)

After sometime I realized that your better off adding a splash of unsweetened almond milk and some more stevia/sweetener and Himalayan pink salt

Plus it also comes down too calories in calls out sadly so maybe subbing out the keto coffee with cream and butter for less calories or in place of more caloric meals

N=1

I have two cups of coffee daily (typically starting 7:30-8am), with 1.5 tbls of HWC each. I make sure to stop drinking caffeine by noon then lunch at 1am so I’m sipping coffee and HWC for up to 4 hours. I try to close my eating window by 7pm so I have lots of time to digest before going to bed. As Tom said, fat (HWC) probably won’t spike insulin too much. To me, this is a “modified” 18:6 IF. I wouldn’t worry too much about the fatty coffee, but again. N=1.

Personally, I found I wasn’t making progress by drinking coffee with HWC (or other additives), so I stopped.
Now I drink black coffee (or tea) with nothing added.
I only drink coffee or tea with HWC during mealtime (or I count it as a meal).

I used to take hours to drink my coffee (still do if it’s take away) but for me the benefit of the keto coffee is 1) it keeps me full for hours 2) it gives me an energy boost so by taking hours to drink it you aren’t really getting the full benefit. Also a dentist once told me to drink my coffee in a short space of time to limit getting yellow teeth :stuck_out_tongue:
