Keto Cats - Recipes and/or Products

(Kelly LeBlanc) #1

We have recently transitioned our cats to a keto diet and our vet is thrilled with the changes in their heath so I wanted to share what we settled on for feeding them.

http://www.weruva.com/

And we usually buy the Cats in the Kitchen line.

If you have cats that are keto please share what you are feeding them, recipes or products.

We have a few finicky eaters and are looking for options to try, especially as they seem to stop loving the foods that they love about every 5-6 weeks. Thanks!

I haven’t seen that brand around – I always try one can to see if they’ll eat it. I have 4 rescues and have been trying to turn them into Keto Kats for awhile now. They are on grain-free food, but can be quite picky, as you know. We tried raw food, but they’ll have none of that.

I buy the Weruva for my cat, but am trying to get him away from tinned. He eats a lot of what I eat, most times he eats more from my plate than I do.

I give him raw chicken giblets that he loves and raw diced chicken as well. He is nearly 12 years old and the last few years has been sick he has some kidney problems, nearly 2 years ago when I went away on holidays and my parents were looking after him they booked him in to be put down, but he is still going, I don’t know how many of his 9 lives he used then.

Dessie enjoying some of the roast duck I cooked the other day.

And this is what I did to my thumb when cutting up his giblets.

Ahh fantastic, I wanted to see if we could get out cat Keto. We got her from the rescue shelter where previously she had an old lady owner who must have fed her every ‘meow’.

She had lost around 2.5kg on the normal diet food but its been 2 years now and I’d like to try something that might be more enjoyable.

We tried raw as well, and got away with it for about 8 months. Then…they shut us down.

I have only seen Weruva in better pet stores that focus on quality and also you can order it online. Tomlinson’s carries it and Chewy does as well. Chewy has the best price I have seen online.

Ouch! But it looks like a nice, clean cut, which is good.

Duck is one of the meats ours won’t eat :frowning: Sadly because I love duck.

We also supplement their food with our food and they especially love chicken and pork.

Let us know how things go. Cats can be picky, but they know what makes them feel well and if you give it to them they will start preferring it. They are so smart.

I’d love to have a keto cat but the fat macro on the weruva stuff is around 35-50%. Is that keto to a cat?

I love duck as well but had never cooked it before so that was the first time that Dessie had tried it.

Dessie wouldn’t eat anything raw for about the first 9 years he would only eat dried food and then when he got sick and the vet did a health check he said he had plaque on his teeth so I should give him chicken wings, I said that I had tried over the years but that he has never eaten them but I would try again, now he loves them.

He very rarely now touches the dried food and I am now only giving him tinned stuff when I run out of fresh, he loves tinned tuna in brine and also sardines in tomato sauce, well he likes the tomato sauce, if I leave the sardines whole he won’t eat them and only eats the sauce so I have to mash them all up.

I gave him the off cuts of the chicken liver when I made pate but he didn’t seem fussed on them, he did give them a try but left most of it, I might try cooking some for him next time, it would be good if I could get him to eat liver with all the nutrients as he practically has constant diarrhea and doesn’t absorb nutrients because of it so he has to have a monthly vitamin b shot that he seems to improve on. I did get him chicken hearts once and he liked those.

I used to give him tinned for breakfast and fresh for dinner and only recently have changed to raw both breakfast & dinner in the hopes it will improve his health. Since he got sick he is always hungry, well that’s what he tells me any way, that is why I feed him twice a day and then he gets some when I eat dinner as well. He used to weight 8kg but now is only 5kg.

The one good thing about him getting sick is that he was never a very affectionate cat and now he always wants to sit on my lap and give me cuddles.

This is him now.

Ideal macro ratios for a cat are different than for humans. They do better with more protein than fat. At least per my vet. But they should be very low carb. And also no grains or fruit though some veg occasionally can be ok.

Not all of the Weruva brands are the same. I specifically feed Cats in the Kitchen because of the low carbs and my cats prefer it. Some of their other labels have higher cards.

Keto cat recipes turns out not to be what I was expecting.

Carry on.

(Mark Anthony Spiteri) #12

haha I wonder what you were expecting… :smirk:

(Kelly LeBlanc) #13

He’s a cutie! I hope you can figure out the best combination for him. Such as sweet boy.

(Kelly LeBlanc) #14

Curious as well. I guess they might be closer to ZC?

Wish my cat would eat the meat we humans enjoy. Was enough of a challenge to get him to eat canned cat food. After spending too much of his kittenhood in a shelter, he really loved his dry food. Was buying him high end “no grains” dry cat food, but didn’t realize that it was still high in the carbs. Fillers used to hold the kibble together (squash, rice, sweet potatoes, etc, etc)
He dropped weight and increased his endurance once we eliminated the dry food. He is now “low carb” canned. Just wish he’d eat meat! I wouldn’t even mind if he ate it cooked, just eat meat, Kitty!!! Please?!

(Kelly LeBlanc) #16

We have one (of 3) like that too.

And as for…
Just wish he’d eat meat!
I found that our non-meat eater would eat salmon when I make it. And he loves bacon. But so far those are the only 2 meats we’ve been successful with. I keep trying.

(David) #17

 please tell me blob (as in blob.jpg) is his name?

(David) #18

I am sat here on the garage while my car gets looked at and I just chuckle-snorted.

(Rebecca) #19

No his name is not blob. I have no idea why the photo would be called blob.
