I’m signed up to run my third marathon - the Bay of Fundy International Marathon on June 28th 2020. I have run several half marathons fasted and without fuel since becoming fat adapted but not a marathon. I am planning on using Keto Bricks for fuel because there is no way I am going back to GU or gels. Has anyone here done that? How did it go?
Keto Bricks for Marathon Fueling
Honestly I think you could eat a glazed jelly donut every hour during a marathon (of course that would make you sick!) and still be in ketosis after the race was over. I don’t know how KETO Bricks would be energy wise. Aren’t they supposed to be full macros? I don’t think you would benefit from something you need to digest as a food during a marathon. Pure glucose or MCT or ketones would make more sense to me, not protein. I’ve never used any formulated KETO products of any kind, just whole foods. I’ve also never been a runner so maybe I’m not the best person to listen to on this matter. I thought KETO Bricks were more of a meal replacement bar to use while hiking, mountain biking and things like that. Not brutal running! Good luck in the marathon and I hope you enjoy it and feel good doing it. I assume this is the first time running a marathon in ketosis?
Good luck with your marathon. We just got back from St John a few weeks ago on vacation - beautiful place to run!
Those keto bricks look interesting. If I was a prepper I’d surely stock up on them!!!
Apple Cider Vinegar; a table spoon or two with some sea salt and table salt (for some possible iodine since it is so volatile and you will be losing a lot of it) in water and resistant starch would make a good source of fuel with or without the keto brick?
Maybe a little MCT oil mentioned above?
Experiment and see how it goes?
You MAY want to rethink that. You’re running a marathon! Ketones may be rocket fuel for our brains, but glucose is rocket fuel for the body. If you haven’t done enough testing of what you can pull off in ketosis I don’t think a marathon is a good testing ground. If it was a 10k or something sure, but a marathon is no joke.
^^^THIS! When you ingest your fuel during a marathon you want it right then! Not after it breaks down and is metabolized. Glucose is available as a fuel as fast as you put put it in your face hole. If you REALLY want to do it 100% on ketones I’d get a higher quality ketone supplement like Perfect Keto, they’re overpriced but work well. Although those keto bricks are middle finger priced as well.
experiment on yourself.
run so many miles and eat some keto brick and keep running.
I think this is a good idea. Ketones do fuel the body…you do not need glucose to do that at all.
If you are a true runner, doing keto and running 1/2 marathons already and this is your personal thing you have been doing…then heading to a full marathon is fine and the keto bricks a good idea.
I think with a bit of experimenting you will do wonderful.
Just google ‘marathons and keto eating’ and tons of runners tell their story about running and foods. Wealth of info out there to draw from.
I’m also a keto or HFLC marathoner. If you’re running the marathon to simply finish, then it doesn’t if you stick to sugar free fueling, but if you want to compete or really push your pace you need to add in sugar during the race. You’ll process it so fast that it will have no impact to your blood sugar or long term keto/HFLC diet. By being keto you have re-taught your body to be able to switch efficiently between fuel sources (glycogen & fat), so you won’t have any peaks or valleys during the race, no bonking.
Whatever you decide, make sure that you practice with it well ahead of time!
Look into what other keto marathoners do. Try searching for Zach Bitter online.
