Hi, I’m about to start the Keto Diet, I have been on weightwatchers for years, but it is no longer working for me and I’m struggling big time, which is why I wanted to try something completely different. My struggle here is the amount of high calorie, high fat foods that I will need to consume. This goes against everything I have ingrained in me. From what I have read, counting carbs is the key? How many carbs in a day should I have? Will Keto still work if I use low fat options such as fat free creamer for my coffee? or low fat cheese? I eat a lot of fruit now, which could be part of my struggle, is it good to give it up for the first month on the Keto diet? Thanks for any tips to get me toward success.

You should stay under 20 net grams of carbs per day. Fruits can be high in carbs (a banana averages 24 carbs), but limited amounts of berries like raspberry, strawberries or blueberries are okay. Just make sure you account for them in your carbs and don’t go over.

You need to get the high fat is bad thing out of your head if you’re going to be successful on Keto. You want to avoid low fat items.

Simple rules:
No more than 20net carbs per day
Protein in moderation
Eat fat to satiety - this needs to be the bulk of what you are consuming. And do not go hungry.

Try to limit/eliminate snacking. Get all your food in at meal times and eat enough to carry you to the next meal.

The whole idea is to control insulin levels through what you eat (fat vs carbs) and how often you eat. Grazing will kill a Keto diet.

Thanks that is great advice. I see my only roadblock being switching my mental attitude about high fat being bad. But the low fat thing is just not working any more and I’m always starving. So I’m willing to do what it takes to not be hungry all the time and lose the weight.
