Keto and Upper Leg Cramps

(Linda Culbreth) #1

Is having upper leg cramps (front thigh area) just a personal anomaly or common to others in ketosis?

The day I finally went into ketosis (type 2 diabetics, like me, may take longer…) I have had excruciating thigh cramps. This has happened in spite of adding more potassium, magnesium, and extra water with the Himalayan pink salt in it

Anybody have any other suggestions? Is it even related to ketosis?

You might need even more salt than you think.

I was taking magnesium, potassium, and calcium daily, and was still getting leg cramps at night. What’s made the difference for me is increased sodium intake. YMMV.

Calf cramps were my thing. I use magnesium oil spray a few times a week and they’ve vanished.
Buy a cheap spray bottle from the pharmacy and a bag of magnesium chloride off eBay. Dissolve the salt in an equal volume of water on a low heat and transfer to the spray bottle.
Just spray your legs with it at a few times a week, at a time when you can have bare legs for a wee while after.
It sinks in through the skin and is highly effective at stopping cramps.

Even when I supplemented with magnesium, potassium and salt, I continued to have leg cramps, including in weird places like outer and inner thighs or shins, especially if I had any alcohol at all. I have recently started adding calcium citrate upon the recommendation of @Brenda, and it seems to have resolved the issue (even after 3 glasses of wine   )

Thanks - I will up the salt even more. Oh, I am already taking calcium.

Clare - sounds like a possibility, too. Wonder if I can get the mg. salt locally.
I am glad to know that his is not just me!

I bought a huge bag which is looking like about a five years supply for £10 from eBay - since it’s about £8 a bottle in my local shop, I figured this was the way to go.
Amazon / eBay are your best bets but I guess a sports supply or body builder place might have it.

Thank you.

Megan Ramos recommends you let the Himalayan salt melt on your tongue. She says the salt becomes better and more quickly absorbed than when you melt it down in the water and drink it. This was on of the more recent Fasting Talk podcasts, sorry don’t have it in front of me at the moment.

I am in the middle of a fast and I am just letting it melt down, so far, so good.

Thanks, worth a try.

I have always had issues with leg cramps. When I started Keto my cramping intensified, what seemed like a million fold! I got an electrolyte supplement that went in water that I drank at night (cramps were always worse at night).

I recently started drinking lemonade twice daily and I no longer need the supplement. I have a glass at lunchtime and dinnertime made with the juice from 1 lemon, 2 tsp swerve, a pinch of salt, water, & ice in a pint glass.

Thanks, Cathie. Mine are certainly worst the later the evening goes. I have a lemon and a lime. Looks like I am about to make me some lemonade…
