Hi Everybody!!

Unfortunately I am on Pregabalin ( Lyrica is another brand) medication which has made me put on weight.
I am desperate to lose some weight and wondered if anyone had any knowledge of KETO and medications that can cause weight gain.

Help !!!

Thank you

Welcome to the forums.

Whether a ketogenic diet can combat the weight-gaining side effect of a drug is an open question, and the answer would depend both on the drug in question and on the current state of your metabolism.

But it doesn’t seem likely that cutting carbohydrate and upping fat intake to compensate is going to hurt you, regardless, even if it doesn’t combat the drug-induced weight gain. You may also find the diet working to reduce the symptoms for which you are taking pregabalin, so consult with your doctor about what to do, if that is the case. You might need to reduce the dosage. And of course, the best case would be being able to eliminate the drug entirely, but I don’t know the drug well enough to begin to speculate just how likely such a case might possibly be.

My son takes Risperadal which is known to increase appetite and thus weight. He accepted that for years and has been overweight as a result… but he also ate a lot of carbs, especially sweets.
He was recently diagnosed diabetic. So we convinced him to cut down his sweets and portion control.
Within a month he lost 20 pounds, and he wasn’t completely keto. Just reduced carbs.

I remember when I used to always gain weight if I had to take steroids. And I think I could take them now and not gain weight, because I wouldn’t change my diet or portions.

I’ve always wondered… how can it be that a pill alone would make me gain weight. Doesn’t it have to be the food I eat when on that pill?
This is all just musing on my point. Not judging. Honestly curious.

It should help, Lyrica weight gain is mostly just water retention if I’m remembering right, when you eat keto you hold much less water. I’d have your doc prescribe you a mild diuretic like HCTZ that you can take daily, but you can also do natural ones that do actually help like Dandelion Root, around 1000-1500mg with each meal does actually pull water out of you. That one is big with fighters because they’re tested for diuretics.

Pregablin is one of the worst abused prescripted drug here, particularly Belfast.

It’s a problem. Please monitor yourself, and maybe ask if there are any alternative treatments?

I’m not trying to tell you what to do- that’s the last thing, honest.

I just have great knowledge of that particular prescribed drug use in my own country.

There’s a documentary on BBC iPlayer on it. If you can’t find it and want to see it, ask me for a link.

Good luck :+1:

Thank you for your reply. Yes, makes sense, I have heard it can cause water retention.
