Keto and gall bladders

I’m a Newbie, both to Keto and this forum. I had my gall bladder removed 41 yrs ago (I’m now 63). Haven’t had issues with GB since but now trying to do Keto, there are times that it feels like the high amount of fat gives me a little tummy ache. Is this normal or should I be doing something differently? I heard Dr Mercola say that people with no gall bladders should ALWAYS take lipase but I have never done so.

Hi Donna. :slightly_smiling_face: Just one person’s opinion - if lipase is really called for, I think it will be on an individual basis. I’m 58, and had my gall bladder out in July of last year. My wife had hers removed 10 years ago, and my mother-in-law 15 years ago. None of us have any trouble with fat digestion, even in quantity. Sometimes you hear advice to go easy on fats, to eat like 80% vegetables, etc., but I don’t know anybody who really changed their diet, or needed to, apparently, after gall bladder removal. I question Dr. Mercola’s admonition there since it sounds so generalized for everybody.

However, I also wonder what harm it could do to take lipase. Doesn’t look like too much… “Lipase seems to be safe for most people. It can cause some side effects such as nausea, cramping, and diarrhea.”webmd.com

I had my gallbladder removed before I went keto too. I used an oxbile supplement with fatty meals to boost my bile salts in the first month or so.
