Keto and diarrhea

(Barbara) #1

Been doing Keto since January… never had an issue with diarrhea… until the last week… traded my sea salt for Pink Himalayan salt… Today it dawned on me… so I researched Pink Himalayan salt too find it causes diarrhea…
Thought I would post if anyone is having diarrhea and using pink Himalayan salt…

(less is more, more or less) #2

No problems here with that.

I second no problems.

Really … I was mixing two teaspoons with water drinking it in the morning… diarrhea all day … for the past 5 days … I was thinking I solved my issue with diarrhea… using regular sea salt today seeing if any difference…

Or maybe spread it out during the day instead of taking it all at once. I use a little in my coffee, then sprinkle it on food as needed, and once in a while I’ll have some in ketoaid (but I’m not consistent about it).

I was way overdoing the salt and had the same problem.

I take it to control my leg cramps … does help
Prevent them … do you have leg cramps ?

Too much of ANY salt will do this, and that’s way too much in one go.

I ageee. I only use about 1/2 to 5/8 tsp per liter of water and usually only drink about 1/2 of that at a time. I drink about 2 to 3 liters of this per day (FYI, I’m also pretty sedentary due to health issues).

two teasopoons? You literally made yourself a nice little laxative there  There are a bunch of different kinds of laxatives, and saline laxatives (like the one you made) are one of them. There’s also stimulant ones, like Dulcolax, as well as others. Lesson learned, eh?

Perhaps you’re assuming causation due to the timing of switching when it could be something else altogether.

Magnesium supplements are typically suggested for muscle cramps. Are you also supplementing magnesium? Too much can also cause loose stools.

Too much Mg plus too much Na (at one time), can most definitely cause your issues.

(Barbara) #13

I am monitoring my reaction to sea salt … see what develops…
Thank you everyone on the feedback…

(Barbara) #14

I drink Calm which has 325 mg per serving…

(Lonnie Hedley) #15

Taken at the same time as the salt? Any magnesium rich foods that could be increasing magnesium levels?

How about MCT’s? Trade off from the energy is the possibility of disaster pants. :joy:

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #16

All green vegetables contain magnesium, because it is the central atom of the chlorophyll molecule.

(Diane) #17

The deeper green the better.

Oh my goodness, no wonder I’ve been having diarrhea lol. And here I thought it was my Starbucks drink. This morning I upped the salt in my morning keto aide drink from 3/4 tsp to 1 tsp and drank it quickly on an empty stomach, and boy did my bowels move. I will definitely start spacing it out throughout the day.

(Barbara) #19

I have been there …

I have the opposite problem since starting keto, so this makes me want to go and drink a tsp of my Pink Himalyan salt in a glass of water… =)
