Keto and Depo?

(Jessica ) #1

I just like many of you that I have read about have experienced my cycle being irregular after starting Keto. I’m currently takeing Depo(birth control injection) and I’m sure many of you know Depo usually eliminates the menstrual cycle. I was just curious if anyone continued doing Keto while on Depo? Did your body regulate? Are you still having your cycle or did it go away again? How long did it take? I love being on Keto but I also love not getting my cycle. Please no negative comments.

Hi Jessica!

I just joined because I have the exact same question/issue. Took depo for 5 years, then switched to Mirena for almost 5 years (it fell out), then back on depo. In all that time, I only had very occasional light spotting- never had a cycle in over 10 years on depo/mirena.

I started Keto 3 months ago, and I’ve had spotting about half the days and 2 full-on periods already. I REALLY hope this stops soon. I’m scheduled for my next dose in a couple weeks, so I’m trying to figure out what I should do. I don’t need it for the birth control aspect (tubes are tied)- it’s mostly just to stop the heavy bleeding. But, if it’s not going to stop the bleeding, I feel like I should just go off it so I at least don’t have to worry about the issues it causes with weight gain/hard to lose weight. I do feel like it may be making my weight loss slower than it should be.

Have you had any luck finding out if it goes back to normal at some point?

Did any of you found out the answer ? I started keto about a week and today I have some spotting I’m trying to see if I should be worry if its normal or if I need to go to the doctor.

I didn’t. I had most recently been taking the pill, and when I mentioned the issues to my doc, she gave me a slightly higher dose pill. This cut down on the bleeding but didn’t completely do away with it.

Your not alone.
I have been on and off depo since 2004. I have a double uterus so super heavy bleeding was not good for me. I tried the merina (sp) for about a year then I started to get excruciating cramps, turns out I ended up getting an infection… I also found out that I was only half protected because I needed 2 IUDs. Went back on depo. I missed my shot in November…to busy hunting, I wasn’t too worried about it because normally it would take 6 months before my cycle to return. I had tested the theory several times over the years when I wanted to give my body a break from depo shots. Started keto for the second time on December 17 2018. Started getting cramps and spotting by December 21. December 23 I went in and got my depo shot and within a day or so it was gone. Now I have been getting cramps and spotting again, this time the back and hip pain is almost unbearable. It is seriously enough to make me reconsider the keto way of life. I have spent the last 14 years avoiding my monthly cycle now it’s back with a vengeance. I really don’t want to have to buy pads and tampons again. Anyone find anything that helps relieve pms symptoms? Advil is good for a couple hours of relief but I hate taking pain killers. I slept through most of it yesterday but I can’t just sleep the pain away for days on end. Sure hope it doesn’t last long.

Ladies! I am so glad I found this. I have been on Depo shot since 2015. No spotting, no cramps, not anything! I started Keto January 6th and by the 17th I was spotting and cramping. I was so confused. I called my Gynecologist and she said it could definitely be do to the extreme diet. I am still spotting as of today the 28th. Unfortunately, I’m worried because yes I have the Depo but can I still get pregnant? My Doctor told me to go ahead and use protection.

I have been on Depo for 5 years and only had light spotting here and there, nothing serious enough to have to buy a whole box of pads or tampons. I started the Keto diet and the flood gates opened. I’m on my 3rd day of having to wear tampons super absorbing and a pad at the same time. I’m changing my tampon twice in a hour and I’m about to call my doctor and see what I should do next. I am losing weight on Keto but I don’t want to bleed to death before I reach my goal weight.

I have not really found anything on the internet about women who are on the depo shot while doing the keto diet who are having a heavy period except for this forum. Weird that there is not much information out there about this. I’m actually worried.
