Hello, I have listened to 95 of the podcasts so far and no one has mentioned so far, the effects of KETO on your teeth or dental work. I started my journey on 1/28/2018. I love all of the wonderful things changing in my body (lost 30 lbs and 5 inches, but the best thing is no more inflammation)! but one thing that I noticed was my abscessed root is no longer bothering me. I had a root canal last year and it failed. My dentist gave me a prescription for 3 rounds of antibiotics in August to hold off the extraction until 2018. He told me do the first round then, then when it starts to abscess again do (probably in two to three months) the second round. I did it in November. He said the last round would only work for a month, but that would bring us to January and I would have my new years benefits to pay for the extraction and new bridge I would need. After I went KETO, it never abscessed again. It the middle of April! I find that fascinating! Anyone else have something similar?
KETO and dental work
Without fermentable carbs, you will not get cavities. This is one part of keto that is most overlooked. I really wonder how much money would be saved in dental cost if everyone followed keto.
Yes!
I have a cavity in a back molar that has been bothering me for the best part of a year - probably much longer now I think about it.
I have a serious fear of dentists after a horrible experience many years ago and put off going until I get dragged along by my family if they know something is wrong.
This sore tooth would always flare up if I had any carbs particularly sugary foods or drinks.
Since Keto (3 months)it has had no pain!
Is it possible for teeth to repair in the absence of inflammation or carbs?
There are schools of thought that believe cavities can be repaired though, no keto ones yet. There are a couple studies out there on tooth decay and cavities refilling themselves. Some people have had success following various protocols. What I take away from these studies that others overlook is that they reduce carb intake significantly. Here’s an article.
Thanks @J_A-M
very interesting and most of the recommendations fit cheerfully into a ketogenic WoE.
It’s like Weston A. Price (dentist) recommended. Fat soluble vitamins good for your teeth. A, D, E (mixed tocopherols and tocophenols <sp?>) and K2. Eat animal fat, have good teeth.
Do not brush with charcoal. It’s abrasive to your enamel and can do lasting damage.
I know this is an old topic, but I was looking for topics on this subject and didnt find anything more recent.
I’ve had a yellow spot on one of my front teeth since I can remember, probably as young as 10 or 11 years old. I started keto about 6 months ago, was looking at my teeth this morning, and just noticed that my tooth is no longer yellow!
I can’t tell you how surprising this is for me as I’ve had this yellow spot for 20 years. I didnt think it would ever go away but I’m pretty sure it’s my new keto diet that did the trick. I cant tell you how but literally nothing has changed in my dental care over the past few years;il I use the same toothbrush, the same toothpaste, and I can even say I haven’t been brushing my teeth as often as I did before. I fall asleep several nights forgetting to brush. I also haven’t been to the dentist in over a year!
