Keto and blood disorder (Polycythemia Vera)

#1

Hi all. I’m 40 yo male, asian. Over 7 months I lost 15kgs, my average BG is in the 80 range, however my cholesterol is above 300. I refuse statins btw.

Recently I was diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera (High Red Blood count) a type of blood cancer that makes blood thicker. I’ve done Keto for 7 months and my diet is meat/dairy based (high in iron). Should I continue this diet? Anyone has improved blood test especially in red blood count while doing keto?

I’m a little bit depressed so please be kind.

Thanks

Talk to your doctor about any foods you should avoid. You should be able to stay keto on other foods like fish.

I’ve heard of people donating blood to reduce excessive RBC or iron. Or you might be able to get a doctor to do it if blood donation is not an option.

No experience with this problem myself or what effect keto would have.

[ I see that Polycythemia is sometimes caused by testosterone replacement. Keto may help with hormone balance, if that is a concern. ]
