Does anyone drink low carb beer or have an occasional drink? Yes I know drinking in general is not healthy, but for me I am a beer drinker and I don’t want to give it up. I do drink 1 to 4 beers a week, it’s either the Michelob ultra, Miller lite, and now the new corona premier which are all low carb and when I do drink it All fall’s within my carb limit. I haven’t noticed any change in the way I’m loosing weight, I’m still loosing and still getting my macros in. Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with beer and keto.
Keto and beer/alcohol
I don’t think 1 to 4 beers a week is anything, really, i.e. no worries. There is some effect - the very small amount of carbs and a maximum of 4.2% alcohol (in the Michelob Ultra) which is only 0.4 ounces or 11 grams of alcohol per beer - the body will have to deal with them. I doubt these amounts will produce a noticeable effect.
During my first 5 months of ketogenic eating and fasting, I had 6 to 8 beers in one evening, perhaps 10 times. After that I’d eat supper, sometimes perfectly keto, sometimes not. I don’t recommend this - I’m sure it delayed and lessened my progress - but my overall progress was good, weight was dropping off, and I felt decent throughout. I’ve heard that a common experience is that while keto, people suffer more after drinking - and now I think this is true for me (it’s been one year now). Yet early on, I didn’t feel any different, and I’m sure that a beer or less per day, on average, is not to be a worry.
If you are still feeling good and still reaching your goals, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t keep doing what you’re doing.
I’m so jealous you are able to get away with drinking it. I LOVE beer, but I suffer from inflammation & swelling whenever I drink it. Alas!
Thank you guys for the feedback. For now since it’s seems to be ok with me having a few cold ones I won’t change but if I ever see my body showing any signs of the alcohol affecting me then I’ll have to make the change and give up my beloved beer .
I was a big fan of heavy craft beers and it was kind of painful to give them up (my favorite was 32 grams of carbs for 1 12oz bottle). After several months of very few beers I happened upon some Mich Ultra Amber and found that I actually kinda almost liked it.
Oh, I did try Bud Select 55 when I first went keto… I can’t believe they call that stuff beer…
For me, I can’t drink and lose weight. I can have rum with club soda when I’m maintaining weight, but my body doesn’t seem to want to lose weight while consuming alcohol.
i drink a few michelob ultras or other light beers here and there. a lot of times it results in me being more hungry in the am but otherwise its not a big deal. i have been keto for years now though.
If I’m not mistaken the hunger comes from low blood sugar. It take allot for the body to process the alchohol thus the munchies
I never gave up my regular libations and have lost 30 pounds in four months. I’m 51, a mother and housewife. I’m menopausal. My most vigorous days consist of the gym and some housework along with hours of reading.
I enjoy bourbon and Chardonnay. Separately all you silly dillies
If I can still be fat adapted with my glass of wine, or two, than I imagine anyone can.
I say, test it out
I hope this was helpful
Keep calm and keto on
Alcohol stalls you for a period of time, longer the more you drink. When you drink alcohol your body sees it as a poison. Your liver will prioritize changing the alcohol into a harmless compound. Until this is finished any fats you eat are straight away stored as fat on your body. If you’re going to drink it’s best to leave out fats or fast altogether for much of the next day following a night of drinking any alcoholic beverages. Don’t get me wrong, I drink a glass of champagne or hard spirits now and then too. But just know the hidden consequences involved.
At home I only drink whiskey, and only one or two times a week. But if I’m at a bar with friends, I’ll have beer – the only carb cheat I allow myself. A Guinness is only 10 carbs.
I used to drink a LOT of beer, at least three or four every day. My desire for the stuff just kind of faded on keto.
