Keto and aunt flo

(Rochelle White) #1

Before starting keto I would spot for three days and be done. I’ve been strict keto since May 1 and this cycle is heavier than normal and (sorry about the TMI) it looks to be old blood with small clots. Has anyone else experienced this or have an explanation?

If you search this forum, you will find lots of threads about this. In the beginning, Keto can really mess with women’s periods. Not all the same way though. Some skip periods altogether and some get very heavy flows.

I’ve not read any accounts that last longer than a few cycles though, if that helps. Though maybe there are some.

I’m the opposite. I’ve had late or skipped periods. But I’m not complaining. Aunt Flo can keep her visits to a minimum for all I care.

It’s all over the board. Hormones are crazy. I have been keto for 2 months, and I have had a period every two weeks. Every. Two. Weeks.

Not to be insensitive, but I had no idea who this Aunt Flo was. Then I remembered Aunt Irma.

[too… much… stress… must find… way… to insert… humor :confounded:]

Ah “the internet” (my favorite episode)

I’ve had the same issue. I did Keto previously for two months. My cycle went from 1-3 days of light spotting, to 5-7 days of heavy flow with clots. :unamused:. This time, I’m trying to work through it and praying it will level out after a few months.

Again, I have t heard from anyone who has complained about it lasting more than a few months, and I’m sure they would turn up here and comment if there were any. Try and stick with it at least 4 months and see if it all works itself out.

My understanding is that fat loss can also release hormones which are stored in the fat cells. I think that’s why extended fasting really messed me up. A couple of days into my last 5 day fast, I started a heavy period that lasted for 2 1/2 weeks. So between the hormonal healing and the weight loss that comes with eating ketogenically, it can mess with your cycle.

Good luck!

Thank you! That’s the plan. I’m just going to be patient and work through it. The energy I’ve gained and weight I’ve lost is too great to turn around again.
