Keto and anti-depressants

(zahra) #1

I have been taking Fluoxitine and Risperidone for 6 months and at the same time have been keto. I was fine until we switched my medication to Cipralex. Now I fall asleep after I eat no matter how much coffee I drink. It does not matter what I eat, weather it is a keto bar or a salad or just protein. I can’t function at work. Help.

While some people find they can come off their anti-depressant on a ketogenic diet, this is not true of everyone. In general, if you are eating a very low carbohydrate intake, you should be able to eat enough protein and fat to satisfy your hunger. This will give you enough energy, as well as allowing your body to shed any excess fat it may have in store.

Unfortunately, this is almost certainly unrelated to keto. SSRIs (like Cipralex) are notorious for causing both drowsiness and (ironically) insomnia and other weird things. I would definitely talk to your doctor and express your concerns. You may need to revert to your previous regimen or he/she might adjust your dosage.
