Keto Almost Killed My Dog - Macadamia Nuts

#1

Woke up this morning to find two bags of macadamia nuts in her cage. She is about 45lbs. Apparently she ate about 6 ounces but we are not sure. We had two open bags, one salted which H prefers and one unsalted for me. She had eaten during the night and could barely move. She is a young dog and is normally bouncing around. This morning she walked like she was arthritic. Kept lifting different paws as though she was injured which she is not.

Tried to induce vomiting (although it was late for that) and it did not work. Gave her activated charcoal (the receptionist at the vet commented that most people do not have that in their house). She seemed better but not well when we got to the vet. The vet is in her 50s but this is probably her first case of it since we are on the East Coast. The vet was pulling up the Merck manual and reading from it. Nothing to do but wait, she did not need IV fluids and should be ok I hope

Oh wow. I wasnt even aware that macadamia nuts were an issue with dogs. Good to know. I hope your pup feels better soon.

Thank you. I was aware because we were stopped from giving her a cookie with macadamia nuts by my son who said they were toxic. This was about a year ago and I looked it up at the time.

Other common dog toxins, chocolate, grapes, onions and garlic although with the last two we do give them leftovers that may be cooked with small amounts and she and the other dog are ok

Here is a better list

The following foods may be dangerous to your pet
Alcoholic beverages
Apple seeds
Apricot pits
Avocados
Cherry pits
Candy (particularly chocolate—which is toxic to dogs, cats, and ferrets—and any candy containing the toxic sweetener Xylitol)
Coffee (grounds, beans, and chocolate-covered espresso beans)
Garlic
Grapes
Gum (can cause blockages and sugar free gums may contain the toxic sweetener Xylitol)
Hops (used in home beer brewing)
Macadamia nuts
Moldy foods
Mushroom plants
Mustard seeds
Onions and onion powder
Peach pits
Potato leaves and stems (green parts)
Raisins
Rhubarb leaves

One of our dogs ate half a bag of macadamia nuts last year. Got very constipated, but no other issues. Good luck to you.

Thank you. She is much better today. She slept most of yesterday and looked arthritic.

One of our kids came home today and she is back to jumping all over.

Interesting how certain foods that dogs will eat are so bad for them. Makes you wonder about what we eat that is bad

Their problems is perhaps that they have been domesticated for so long that they have lost much of their natural instinct that might have stopped them eating things which are bad for them.

Also. much of the human “food” that might come their way is so unnatural. But Macadamia nuts are a relatively natural product, so that’s a bit odd.

While at the vet I was told a sad story about a 170 lb healthy mastiff whose triplets innocently fed him their halloween candy (after they were not allowed to eat it). The poor dog died and there was nothing the vet could save him
