I started a keto diet restricting my carb intake to less than 20-50mg/ day 4 days ago. I have noticed a few side effects like fatigue, cravings and dry mouth, but overall nothing serious. That is until last night when I woke up with intense heartburn or acid reflux with watery eyes, chills and a stuffy nose. I felt like I had to vomit, but except for some slime, nothing came out. In addition, the corner of my right eye, where I must have rubbed my eyes, became swollen very similar to when I had an allergic reaction to certain foods in the past. I took some benadryl and pepto bismol and my symptoms mostly subsided, but I don’t think this could be caused by something I ate this time. I didn’t have anything to eat that I haven’t been eating these last 4 days, and even then, I didn’t begin having these symptoms until 3 or 4 hours after I last ate. Is this a side effect of keto? Could it be toxins that were caught up in fat that is breaking down and entering my blood stream?
Keto Allergic Reaction
Lots of viruses and such going around this time of year. Unless you have added a new food then I wouldn’t think that eliminating foods would give you these symptoms. If anything, heartburn should be better with keto eating. As far as stomach issues I usually have an episode about three or four days in and it too is better than pre-keto. I would just chalk it up to a slight case of food poisoning or a virus.
I think you’ve just caught a bug or you introduced something new into your diet that you are allergic to.
It’s possible the side effects of carb withdrawal is being paired with something environmental, like a virus.
After reading a little closer you are at the four day mark. I don’t know about the watery eyes, but that is about the point that I experience a cleanse as far as the stomach is concerned. I don’t have the heartburn, but do get about 1/2 day of upset stomach around the four day mark. Just temporary issue that I actually look forward to, due to some bloat feeling leaving.
My watery eyes was mostly a result of my coughing and thinking if only I could cough up this really sour feeling in my chest and esophagus, I would feel better. Ultimately, pepto bismol really helped with that. The swelling around my eye is gradually decreasing and I will continue to take benadryl per directions until it’s better. There was nothing I ate yesterday that I haven’t been eating the past few days, so I was confused what may have caused it. However, it could be also be a delayed allergic reaction. I did begin eating a few different foods I never had before a few days ago, most notably cod which my identical twin brother is allergic too, along with other fish. But anyway, thanks for all your answers. I was concerned if toxins entering my blood stream would cause these symptoms, which if they were, it’s a good thing I am getting them out, but to wake up feeling like this was a shock.
I’ve been keto now for just over two months and I’m dealing with a lot of detox stuff for sure. I have lately experienced a break out of some itchy rash/pimples. My throat has been hurting me the last week. I’ve been coughing and I’m having lots of phlegm that seems to be located in my throat and I just can’t seem to clear it. My eyes are super crusty in the morning now and itching and I was so very sore all over for the past two months but that seems to be going away finally, plus very low energy. I’m way past the keto flu stage. That has ended a couple weeks ago, but there is a battle brewing inside me, and it seems like some microbes and toxins have received their eviction notice.
I have done many detoxes in the past, so this feels very familiar to me.
I have something going on as well. Been at this LCHF/Keto for almost 2 years. Woke this morning with FBG under 100 for the first time in quite a while. Very dizzy the last 2 mornings, and a various times throughout the day. I went ahead and lifted, and was clear during that time, but soon after lifing, was dizzy again. Going to get the BP checked now. I know my salt intake is good, not sure about magnesium.
