Keto after thyroid removal

(Martin Wilkes) #1

I had my thyroid removed two years ago. I have to take thyroid hormone supplements. I’m wondering if there are others like me in the group. Been eating keto for a week now and am still tired, exhausted really. Maybe because I have no thyroid?

I still have a thyroid (Hashimoto’s), but I take supplemental hormones for my hypothyroidism.
I have been eating this way for over a decade and feel great, so I doubt the problem is your lack of a thyroid (your Rx gives you what you need). It’s just the natural adjustment of your body to this way of eating.

Also, how often do you get your thyroid levels checked? I’m checked every 4 months, but twice I’ve had
a problem that required increasing my dosage, and both times, my symptom was crushing fatigue. So it’s possible that it’s related to your thyroid if you need a dosage adjustment.

I have no thyroid and am on day 12 of induction. Last September I quit keto because of fatigue thinking it was my thyroid. This time I kept increasing my sodium and potassium til the lethargy went away. Currently supplementing 4000 sodium and1300 potassium. I also recommend drinking enough fluid to keep your urine straw color- barely yellow - to ensure you are hydrated. Hope you feelbetter!

My father had his thyroid out 2 years ago as well and is on the meds. He started keto 3 months ago and is down 30 lbs. He says he feels great now other than having trouble sleeping.

Thanks, everybody. I’ll try supplementing with sodium and potassium. I’ve only been doing this one week. I was having sleeping problems long before I started keto. Don’t know what to do about that. I’m going to stick with keto. Hopefully I will adapt at some point and the fatigue will lift.
