Keto 1 year and blood pressure whacky

(Richard Theroux) #1

Keto now for 1 year. Stats (before - current):
Weight: 194 - 155
A1c: 7.4 - 5.4
FBG: 180 - 90
BHB; ? - 1.0+
Allergies: horrible - what allergies?
LDL: OMG - who cares
HDL: 45 -79
Triglycerides: 145 - 90
CRP: what’s a CRP - 2.3
Coronary Calcium Score: ? - 0

Ok, so Keto has changed my life significantly. I am basically my own physician these days, with the exception of my aortic aneurysm (holding at 4.8cm since going Keto).
My one main concern at this point is my blood pressure. Because of my annurysm, I do try to keep it fairly low. However, it is all over the place. When I started Keto, I was taking 4 medications: Levothyroxin, statin, and 2 BP meds. I now take only half a tab of 1 BP med. I have seen readings from 90/45 to 150/110. This is frustrating. At one point it was 110/65 almost evreytime I checked it (multiple times a day). I have always been told that to control my BP, I needed to lose weight. Done! But still high most of the time. I take all the recommended supplements (fish oil, magnesium, K2, CoQ10, garlic), I just cant get any consistency. Any wisdom out there?

Do hope others “in the know” answer this one - my BP reading can go from 99/54 to 150/95 within a couple of hours.I take 50 mg losartan once daily unless the BP is too low. Then it bounces too high. Doesn’t matter if IF or EF or feasting. I, also, would like to know what is going on.

Sounds very familiar. I halve a 50mg Losartan in the morning. At several points I quit taking all together because BP was getting in that low range, or steadying out. I can take full dosage and still be through the roof. Of course my cardiologist wants me to be on full dosage. I even quit drinking coffee for a few days, mixed result, nothing amazing.

I hope this isn’t offensive as it’s kinda of a simple thought, but are you keeping hydrated? I know hydration can affect BP.

Probably not an issue, but was what came to mind when I read your post.

Hope you are able to find something that gets it stabilized.

Maybe test your BP how people check blood sugar reactions to food. Whenever possible, test your BP after you eat. Maybe you are having a reaction to a certain kind of food.

Thanks - so that makes at least 3 of us with whacky blood pressures…

Drinking lots of water and taking lots of salt. In answer to testing BP after eating - mine even goes whacky during a several day (4-15 days) fast.

Hi All! My blood pressure has always been in the high range of normal but since going keto for about 5 weeks, it’s officially in the high range. I tested it at 3 different drug stores & the average was 150/98. It’s quite possible I’m not getting enough sodium, but I think I am hydrating enough. I’m going to purchase a home BP monitor so that I can test it more consistently, but is there any research about elevated BP and a keto diet? I hope not, because I love this lifestyle & feel great otherwise. I do get lightheaded when I exercise vigorously but that could be from not consuming enough sodium. Any thoughts on high BP & keto? Thanks for your help!

Did you ever purchase that home BP monitor? If so do you have any further info?

I have always had higher than normal BP usually hovering around the pre hypertension range. Im only 30 so I never thought anything about it but I’ve been told 3 times in the last few months that Im in the full blown hypertension range so I purchased a home monitor (can’t remember brand but was the highest rated one on Amazon) and every time I’ve tested it at home in the evenings im almost a rock solid 120/80. In fact I tested 2 nights ago and was at 122/77. Today at the dentist they checked (IDK why but they did) and I was at 147/91. I don’t know what to think, maybe I have white coat syndrome and don’t realize it and shouldn’t worry? But now high BP has gotten in my head and when I get it checked anywhere but at home I can feel my anxiousness going up lol. Any advice?
