Kefir and Keto

(Barbara Greenwood) #1

I’ve started reading Michael Mosley’s new book on the microbiome, and as a consequence, had my first glut of kefir this morning. Then I got to wondering…

If eating the right diet, I.e. Keto wholefoods, provides fuel to feed the good bugs and starve out the bad ones… then once you’ve corrected your microbiome with a course of kefir, shouldn’t it stay healthy as long as you continue to eat keto?

Anyone care to share experiences of using kefir, or other fermented products, and what difference it made?

I have a tendency towards gurgly guts from time to time… hoping this will help.

To be honest, I think there’s a lot of doubt as to whether or not probiotics actually make it to the useful zone of the gut - although they certainly seem to help to correct a dodgy tummy if you’ve got a bit of food poisoning - but maybe that’s because the passage is less impeded when everything has been leaving by the nearest exit. :flushed:

Prebotics on the other hand are very good because they feed the appropriate flora and it is my understanding that they have a measurable impact on health. So be sure and eat some chicory!

I have some inulin powder - that’s a prebiotic, isn’t it? A daily couple of teaspoons, maybe?

Read the packaging closely - don’t mad with it or your stomach will be playing the ride of the Valkyries. Ask anybody who’s overdone it on the jerusalem artichokes if you want examples.
