Just found this in the Big Issue I’m reading… the article is predicting the foods of the future.
Kalette - kale and Brussels sprout hybrid!
Why ruin a lovely brussels sprout with evil kale!! It’s a GMO nightmare!!!
There’s been a discussion of insect protein in some other thread and I think it’s a no brainer.
Living in San Francisco, there is a thin film of CBDs covering the city so that’s happening, like it or not!
I’ve had a Grapple (apple crossed with grape, small size and grape flavor with apple look and texture), broccolini, and broccoflower. I’ve also had a cherry plum which occurred naturally from a cherry and plum tree that had touching branches. The fruit that grew on those branches was bright pinkish red and almost plum sized and the inside was plum texture with cherry and plum flavor. They were delicious and very juicy. They would often burst their skin though because they were growing bigger than a cherry would.
The grapple was definitely a GMO experiment but, a lot of vegetables can cross pollinate in the brassica group. I wouldn’t be shocked to discover that what we know as kale, broccoli, etc are just crosses from other extinct parent species.
If you cut the top off a kale plant new side shoots will emerge from the power branches. This can be done with any brassica to create little Brussels sprout type bunches. In fact that’s exactly how Brussels sprouts are grown, cutting the top off is required. I don’t think any hybridization is needed to produce this, some varieties probably work better than others. This is a marketing strategy to get people to eat different parts of the plant and charge them more for it.
Been lurking for about two months, and had to join to bump this old thread.
There is nothing gmo about kalette. It is just a kale.and brussel sprout cross. They can be crossed because they are the same species. Most of the cruciferous vegetables are the species Brassica oleracea. This includes kale, broccoli, cauliflower, gai lan, kolhrabi, and all the cabbages. Since they are the same species they can interbreed freely.
I’d also like to point out that grapples are not gmo. They aren’t even hybrids. They’re just small apples that have been soaked in artificial grape flavoring.
I’ve been buying and cooking these for a while from trader Joe’s. I think they are a delicious blend of kale and brussel but then again, I love both individually too!
