Just like that- out of ketosis

(John) #1

Stuck to the typical keto diet today BUT I was 46g of protein over my target protein (26% of my total calories is protein and I use a macro counting app) . Been doing it for 1 week now. All week my urine strip showed purple.

Today was the first day I had alcohol. About 8 oz of vodka over 3 hours mixed with crystal light iced tea.

Now my strip showed negative.

Was that too much alcohol? (I have a high tolerance)
Artificial sweetener? I usually have a Coke Zero and that hasn’t impaired me.
Too much protein?

Bummer.

Probably fine, I drink that much every day. Eventually, quickly, the pee strips stop working. In the beginning you make a lot of ketones and pee them out, as you get more adapted your body uses them instead so they shouldn’t work at all after the first couple weeks.

This morning my strip was back to purple. Weird.

I guess it’s possible to do something that will temporarily stop acetoacetic acid production?

Or the strips are just highly inaccurate.

This.

Something else to remember, any time you consume alcohol it takes priority. It is technically toxic, so your body wants to burn it away first. If you are fat adapted, you should slide right back into ketosis once the alcohol is processed. Unless you get drunk and eat a bunch of carbage while your judgment is impaired!

It could also be the maltodextrin that many of the crystal light flavors have as an ingredient. Maltodextrin is pretty high on the glycemic index. It also has corn syrup solids listed as an ingredient which aren’t good.

I know I have never done that!

I’ve read that alcohol affects the hypothalamus, and that food actually smells better to us when we’ve had a few (or a great many).

And this. I’m often low on ketones in the morning and right back in the range a few hours later. And what @jamestorie said.

You were probably dehydrated after drinking yesterday. It can happen, the ketosticks are not dependable either. I was getting negative results and dropping weight quickly, had energy, felt great etc. So I ditched the sticks and got a breathalyzer. I am just about always in nutritional ketosis.

The artificial sweeteners are a problem for some people, so that could have impacted you.

Just carry on.
