Jogging and Keto: Very High Pulse Rate

#1

Hi,

I am male and 47 years old, 187 cm tall and had a weight of 93 kg when I started with eating ketogenic six weeks ago (6.14 ft tall, 205 pound weight).

My aim is to loose weight in a healthy way.

Beforehand starting with keto I was doing sports regulary:

two times a week, one hour of jogging, pulse rate below 140.

When I go jogging now, I have a pulse rate of 173 after some minutes. This is my maximum pulse. I get scared because it seems too stressful for my body.

Is there anything I can do against this high pulse rate?

Perhaps eating some carbs before jogging? If yes, how many would be helpful?

Not sure how useful this is to you but I’ve seen that my heart rate is significantly impacted by my hydration level. Doing cardio when I’ve taken on less fluids than my normal results in my heart rate being 15-20bpm higher for the same intensity.

Biologically this makes sense, if your blood volume is reduced the heart has to increase rate to maintain same blood flow. I believe electrolytes will have similar effect.

Interestingly for me, if I didn’t have the heart rate meter showing me the difference I don’t think I would have been able to tell

I haven’t experienced the high pulse but when I forget my electrolytes supplements, I do get more exhausted more quickly.

These are the supplements:

I’ve definately noticed this as well since starting Keto.
I’m interested in hearing more opinions.
So far, I take a small break to drink water and let my heart rate come down, then carry on. It IS a little concerning when you’re used to having much more ā€˜stamina’ …

at least here
9m57s@Dr. Zeeshan Arain - ā€˜Why aren’t I losing weight on LCHF?’
it is mentioned to ā€œtake some good quality carbons around the time of excerciseā€.

So my first idea would be to take some (full grain) cereals before jogging.

Maybe:

  • 50 grams
  • 3 hours before starting with jogging.

Would that make sense?

Today i noticed the same thing. I am doing keto since a while but i recently started to restrict protein.
I felt fine and normal and wasn’t sure if the HR measurement via the optical sensor of my watch is correct, but i exercised 3 times today and the numbers were pretty high on all of them.
I am used to pretty low numbers, i need to put some real effort into it to get to 160, but today i was easily over 160 and even above 170.
Not sure what to think of it but since i am feeling fine i am not concerned.

I was relieved when I read your post. For me to keep my heart rate below 135 when running, I need to be going at the speed of a brisk walk. I just thought I was unfit.

That’s perfectly normal, running is a lot more taxing then cycling for example.

some people take longer to fully switch to fat burning, back off a bit till your full energy returns

this is a good video on athletes and keto

Thanks for the link.

So, yes, in the last quarter of the presentation, he mentions the ā€œultra marathon runnersā€.

But what I do miss, is some concrete advice about what they eat to take these distances.

And are they all in the keto regime when they are running?
