Joe Rogan Experience #994 - Dom D'Agostino

science

Lots of keto talk, really interesting stuff

(jilliangordona) #2

I just finished this today. Pushed me to pick up some exogenous ketones I had been debating on. Curious to see how some other changes work for me!

(Tim) #3

Dom is awesome. Great listen!

#4

Agreed. This was excellent. Im still not sold on the benefit of exogenous ketones, but I enjoyed the science and his knowledge. Joe Rogan does an excellent job with these technical guests. The Taubes show was great, too.

#5

Dom benefits financially from selling exogenous ketones and is a driver for research funding, so I wouldn’t necessarily trust his opinion.

(Adam Kirby) #6

Right, it’s possible they are useful for high performance athletes, but what exact purpose do they serve for the average person? None, just excess energy you have to burn off.

(Dany Bolduc) #7

** These are just my thoughts and reasoning … not based on any science I read.

To me they are no more and no less than these squeezable glucose gel packets runners and cyclists squirt in their mouth every few kilometers.

Will they help the average joe: not really (even during exercise)

Will they hurt the average joe: maybe*

*If you’re NOT fat adapted, I’m not clear on what will happen to these free floating ketone.

I’m pretty sure they will not just hang around forever until you get to burn them as energy.

Will they get turned into aceto-acetate and come out in the pee ? (not so bad) (as is the case with a larger portion one’s own ketone production that is not used pre-fat adaptation)

Will they be metabolized and stored as fat ? (that would be bad)

A combination of both ?

The ONLY scenario where I think these can be any good to use is this:

  • You are a fat-adapted athlete… during an event

  • You are currently expending energy at a higher rate than your fat stores can release usable energy (+/- 30 cal. / lb of fat / day)

In all but this scenario, I say you are just putting “energy” in your body that you can’t burn, so you’ll have to deal with it some other way (excreting or storing)

I would say this is the same as a sugar-burner squirting a lot of glucose gel while his glycogen stores are full and he’s not burning them.

Exogenous ketones is readily usable energy … but you have to make sure you will “use” it otherwise, they’re just energy you’ll have to deal with some other way.

One thing I deplore is that some people/advert make them sound as if they would act as a stimulant would … like caffeine, ephedrine or adrenaline which I highly doubt they would…. But again, I never tried them

(Jane Reed) #8

Doc Nally uses them all the time and recommends them to his patients. BUT, he, himself, is under constant stress as a clinical practitioner. Exogenous ketones keep him going, rather like an athlete. As for his patients, he has not said so but I think he recommends them to people in similar situations.

For the rest of us, I can’t see spending that kind of money.

super disappointed Dom still has one foot in the CICO world. must be the old bodybuilder bro in him still.

IMO you are completely missing the point. There are several reasons someone MAY want a higher mmol level of ketones in their blood than NK can provide. the anology with gel packs is off base and poorly thought out, and not applicable. the reasons are clearly elucidated in the podcast.
