Is weight gain possible on full keto? zero carbs, limited protein, lots of fat? 5’10", 155 lbs.
Is weight gain possible on full keto?
Absolutely. Calories do count, just not the way that the nutrition establishment professes.
@Elliscpa - a better description would be: as close to zero carbs as possible, limited protein, and fat to satiety.
The “to satiety” part is what will likely keep the weight under control.
Coincidentally, the latest episode of the 2ketodudes podcast was just about that topic - Eating Fat to Satiety.
If you eat beyond being satiated yes. That’s why it’s inportant to try and learn to recognise and work with the true hunger signals your body gives you.
This podcast was excellent. I don’t count calories. I learned to listen to my body - keep the blood sugar low by eating to satiety (lots of fat). I do keep an eye on carbs <20. My body is one smart machine - I let it take care of me.
At 5’10 and 155, it sounds like you may be a bit underweight, especially for a male. A LC diet decreases insulin, which is an anabolic hormone. In a metabolically healthy person, this can make it difficult to gain weight (especially muscle mass) compared to other diets. But it’s not impossible. My family is ketogenic, and no one (except me) needs or wants to lose weight.
If your objective is to gain weight, here are my suggestions:
- Eat to your carb threshold, there is no additional benefit gained by doing ZC.
- Make sure your calories exceed your TDEE.
- Consume towards the higher end of the protein guidelines.
- Increase the frequency of meals.
