Is this normal :S (abdominal pain almond flour)

Hi all :relaxed:

quick intro, new here, just started my 4th week, lots of improvements ( within the 2nd week, softer skin, less depressed, less problems from anxiety disorder, skin disaese clearing up,
IBS seems to have dissapeart, no cravings, no depression and bordem eating)

for the first week and a half i was trying to replace my carbs ( that litle :japanese_ogre: on my shoulder “you cant have a meal without carbs, what are you gonna eat”) so i made a keto bread with coconut flour :woman_shrugging:t3: well i did somthing wrong there, did not tast good at al, but it did not give me problems. then i also made headbangers keto naan a couple of times, wich i enjoid, and again no problems ( slab them with garlic butter, yum)

pretty quickly i lost the urge to compromise for the carbs. then today i dont know why, i just wanted to bake something so i desided to make a keto bread with almond flour.

so for dinner (was not really hungry  keto) we desided to just have some omlet with veg and 2 (thin) slices of the bread.
within 20 min. of having dinner i startted to get abdominal pain like i used to get from my IBS
(but never used to get it from eating raw almonds)

:rofl::rofl: long story short, can almond flour really give such a problem ?!

(i know its a silly question to ask, because everyone is different  in just so confieused because eating raw almonds never used to give me problems)

I have IBS also but IBS usually cause colon spasms not abdominal pain.

Almond flour does not trigger any IBS symptoms in my case.

The only thing that trigger my IBS is hard meat that is hard to chew to start with.

thank you for your reply

you never get/ used to get abdominal pain from IBS ?
I have IBS C/D combined, i used to have spasms ( the pregnancy tests i took before i new i had IBS ) have not had spasms sins keto kicked in. also my belly could blow up in minutes and make me look like 9 mnds pregnant, havent had that eigther sinds keto ( men, that used to hurt al lot)

i am just supriced by the reaction i had from the almon flour, because raw almonds never used to give me problems.

Did keto improve your IBS ?

There could be something else going on, it may not have been a reaction to almond flour. That said, it absolutely could have been! Were you eating roasted or totally raw almonds before? I suppose there could be a difference.

As to your coconut bread disaster, did you let the dough rest ten minutes before baking? Coconut flour needs time to soak up aaaaallll the moisture before it’s ready to bake! And it absorbs tons because it’s essentially all fiber.

I’d be hesitant to blame it on the almond flour, at least just with this single event.

To be honest, I would wonder if maybe one of the eggs for the omelette may have had a touch of salmonella in it or even one of the veggies that went in it. Stuff like that does happen from time to time.

Have you used almond flour for anything else? Any other keto baking? For breading to replace bread crumbs, maybe?

I suppose anything is possible. I’d have thought you’d have had a reaction to just eating almonds if almond flour was going to be a problem. After all, almond flour is pretty much just ground up almonds.

Will be curious to know if and when you find out more.

I was going to say the eggs too. I used to eat eggs a lot 20 years ago and then after my son was born I could not eat them anymore without getting stomach spasms. I could still eat them in baked goods and hard boiled but not scrambled. I avoided them for many years and then was suddenly able to eat them again 5 years ago but until then had the reaction you described. Never had a problem with almond four other than sometimes things were not as tasty as I wanted

Yes significantly.

hi, i did used to eat raw almonds (raw nuts of all types) so that on its own is most probably not the problem :slightly_smiling_face: maybe it was just a bit heavy on me after just veg, meat, fish and eggs for nearly 2 weeks.

if i am gonna make coconutbread again, i’ll let it rest longer, i did rest it but maaybe not lolng enough. thanks for you reply

Another thing that I wondered was, what else is in the bread? I have a recipe that calls for psyllium husk. Um, that stuff is a super laxative! It can cause some serious lower intestinal distress for some.

Just something that came to mind…

Hi there. I never had problems eating whole almonds or almond butter. I do however feel bloated or sometimes get cramps if I eat almond flour. It took me a while to make the connection, but when I did, I stopped using it. I now use coconut or sesame flour. Both are highly absorbent so you will need less. For bread, I also add psyllium powder to make it light and fluffy, but I don’t know if psyllium is ok for someone with IBS.
