Is this Ketoacidosis?

#1

The definition for ketoacidosis is vague and I’m curious to know if this is ketoacidosis.

I’ve been experimenting with keto for a couple months and I’ve noticed that I can easily get into ketosis by hibernating(sleeping) for a couple of days straight and then I basically get out of bed with an amazing feeling of high growth hormone levels. Recently my curiosity got the best of me to try a large dose of carbs; to see what would happen after a week of being in keto. I gulped down 5-7 ripe bananas and 30 seconds later my body started shaking uncontrollably.

Is ketoacidosis basically having too many ketones and glucose in the blood at the same time?

AFAIK it is the uncontrolled breakdown of bodily tissues due to excessive levels of glucose in the blood without any available insulin to manage it. The ketones are a byproduct of the fat breakdown but not the danger per se.

Thus, unless you are a T1 (or T2 with no working pancreas) then just having both will never be KA since you will produce insulin to manage it. Lots of metabolically health people want to be flexible enough to use ketone mainly but get an extra boost from glucose on demand e.g. elite athletes. You may get a short term sugar buzz like you describe but it will not be KA - you would know if you had KA since you would be in no fit state to ask the question on a blog. :scream:

Rob answered your question about what it is … now I have a question …

WHY? Everyone here admires a well thought out “n=1” experiment for a specific reason, but this doesn’t strike me as such. I’m at a loss as to why you’d do this on a lark.

Are you only going into ketosis by fasting (“hibernating” as you say), or are you actually eating a well-formulated ketogenic diet? You say you are feeling the energy benefits, but is that your reason for eating keto, or is it something else?

Isn’t it obvious…? Anyone who has not researched the devastating nature of KA to at least a basic wikipedia standard before considering inducing it is testing Darwinian selection (to a Darwin Awards level) and trying to solve global overpopulation :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

How do you do that? Eat sleeping pills like candy or something? I’ve never been able to sleep longer than 10 hours.

I don’t know how you do that…the sleeping., but do be safe. Eat the correct percentage of fat, moderate protein, and fewer that. 20 g carbs. 6-8 hours of sleep is plenty.

KA will kill you dead. I hope you are not really chasing KA as a goal.

(Tubeman) #9

…how do you sleep that much?

…do you have a den?

(Rob) #10

Hibernation in dens is very dangerous… small blonde girls may enter your property, sleep in your beds and eat your porridge… well that bit’s OK, she’s welcome to the carbs.

Wait you literally just sleep for a day?

Well, if someone is so tired that they need 2 days sleep, then no wonder they wake up feeling better.

And if they had any pharmacological help to either get that tired, or to sleep that long, then again, they will wake up feeling better, won’t they?

But it is a pity to mess up feeling rested and healthy - by eating bananas…

This post is old but it really shows how some of you were condescending back then by making fun of my experiment and me sleeping. I wasn’t wrong and I don’t believe most people who believe they are in ketosis are actually in ketosis. I also don’t believe it’s possible to overeat and still be in ketosis as many promote. https://www.youtube.com/user/fitsk8chick/search?query=sleep

My younger brother has T1D. I ate the bananas because I wanted to feel how temporary ketoacidosis would feel like. I was in full blown ketosis with high amounts of ketones circulating in my blood stream and added the bananas for the high amounts of sugar.

" Ketoacidosis refers to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and is a complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus. It’s a life-threatening condition resulting from dangerously high levels of ketones and blood sugar."

If you’re capable of producing insulin then that insulin will kick in & the high blood sugars will be short lived - no diabetic ketoacidosis. I don’t doubt you felt like garbage but untreated DKA kills.
