Is there such thing as coconut oil sensitivity?

(Jon) #1

Here recently i started fat fasting and substituting some of the fats in my coffee with coconut oil and since ive felt some moderate discomfort in my stomach throught the day and during bowl movements. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences or is this just a symptom of keto flu and or dehydration.

Yes, coconut oil doesn’t sit well with some folks. I didn’t care for how it affected my stomach, either.
MCT oil was really not good for me.
Just stick to the animal fats in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice ,im definitely gonna try that out.

Hope it works out for you. Some people swear by MCT oil or coconut oil but it just didn’t do it for me.
Of course, I’m a carnivore now so my opinions are definitely colored by that.
Good luck Jon!

I have similar issues with olive oil.

I’m sure that someone somewhere is sensitive to everything. That’s a very unfortunate person. He or she is not long for this life. If you are only unfortunate enough to be sensitive to something(s) but otherwise OK with everything else, just avoid the stuff that causes problems. You’ll be fine. If your problem happens to be coconuts, too bad. Coconuts are great, but not for you.

There is such a thing as digestive adaptation to fats that are “new” to us and/or because of higher quantity levels! This is why in the early weeks and months of keto it can be very helpful to take enzyme supplements or cook with digestive spices like Ginger or supplement with Ginger (it’s a pro-enzyme superfood that also does a bunch of other great stuff as mentioned in other posts here). There are other digestive spices too, that can be used to make a base spice oil before sauteing food or for adding on top of cooked food to perfume it - such as sauteed Fennel seeds + Chilli flakes, and/or Cumin seeds, Dill seeds, Black Pepper, Coriander powder, Turmeric, etc.

It’s also helpful to not drink beverages with meals as they dilute enzymes (except for dry wines, which enhance gastrin production - but that’s another subject with other variables).

This is also why MCT oil is supposed to be started at only one teaspoon per serving, then slooooowly increased to one tablespoon per serving otherwise there may be both stomach weirdness plus a laxative effect!

In terms of fats, I think it’s a matter of digestive adaptation window rather than sensitivity per se (apart from casein in butter, but clarified butter/ghee has no casein) - the nutrient-dense nourished body is very adaptive given the chance and the support it needs to change.

An occasional bullet proof coffee is great if you get constipated on keto it helps move things along or prevents impacted stool formation (what you don’t want, that’s when stool becomes so impacted like a rock that you cannot pass it).

If your bile production is low then your ability to to breakdown dietary fat will be low which comes from not eating enough fat long enough to adapt, the more fat you eat, the higher the bile salt production will be and the less stomach and bowel movement discomfort you will have with loose stool. Ox bile salt pills help while your adapting

You may want to add some grass fed butter with that Coconut oil because bile salt will extract all the very important fat soluble vitamins out of the grass fed butter which you will not get from just coconut oil?

Fat soluble vitamins do not require continuous replenishment.

Gotta start with one teaspoon a day and work up.

  • Too much too soon -> terrible gas or disaster pants

Also, take i with fatty food.

  • Taking it straight -> throat irritation

But I’ve gotta have my MCTs.

It’s my understanding that the digestion and use of coconut oil doesn’t require a gallbladder, bile or Ox bile salts. Also it doesn’t seem to be necessary to access the fat soluble vitamins at the same time as coconut oil, just eat the butter for that because it’s already fat! As you say, they don’t need continuous replenishment.

Coconut I can handle. MCT oil I cannot, unless it’s only the pure C8 variety.

Lard makes it all well. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I was only describing a process in that you need bile to break down fat soluble vitamins as coconut oil or MCT’s have no vitamins.

I would really re-think that you don’t need to access fat soluble vitamins assessment because vitamin, minerals and trace elements are a real deficiency problem (not imagined) on a ketogenic diet.

I could give a good example in the way of acid reflux and all the vitamins required to covert zinc into hydrochloric acid and when you don’t get enough zinc, guess what? Your pancreas is punching out sodium bicarbonate and then your choking on stomach acid especially when your sleeping on your right side.

Not arguing their necessity. Only that by eating butter containing fat soluble vitamins that MCT would be a negligible bonus since butter is already a fat and will get you those fat soluble vitamins on it’s own. :cowboy_hat_face:
