Is my BF doing keto right?

(Jenna) #1

Hey everyone. I have been doing keto for about 1.5 years now and loving it. However, my boyfriend has also been doing it for awhile but I don’t agree with many of the things he is doing. I feel like he could be doing more harm than good, so I want to see what you guys think.

So my BF, has no weight to lose at all. His diet consists of ALOT of bad fats, no vegetables and protein. He also insists on doing 20-4 intermittent fasting and he works a pretty labour intensive job.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like because he doesn’t have any fat to lose and he is only eating one meal a day, his calories and macros are so off that he is burning through is fat so quickly that his body is resorting to burn muscle for energy. And because of his body type, he is very tall and slim, doesn’t hold muscle very well. So I feel like any muscle he does have is getting deteriorated because of his diet.

Am I kinda on track here? What do you guys think?

Thanks.

Please define what you think are bad fats? Are you saying he is or is not eating protein? 20-4 intermittent fasting sounds ok to me.

You may or may not be incorrect. You have not given enough information on how many Calories he eats or the types of foods he is choosing to determine whether he is getting enough nutrition. Your concerns seem to be around the 20-4 eating schedule. That schedule is great for maintenance actually. If he is eating enough Calories and fat in the 4-hour window, he is fine. How are his energy levels?

Sorry, I could have elaborated a bit more. He lives off of processed trans fats/polyunsaturated fats.

I know that many people do keto differently, I usually eat lean proteins and try to add healthier fats to it. Eg: coconut oil, butter, fish oil, avaocado etc.

He is eating protein and consuming about 400-600 calories a day. His one meal is usually just a plate of highly processed meat. Eg: smokies, bacon, etc. I am okay with stuff like that once in awhile, usually when I don’t feel like cooking, but for him it’s everyday.

There is nothing wrong with his food choices but he is way under-eating and needs to up his caloric intake. That low is doing harm.

I am not understanding. Processed trans fats are bad, and polyunsaturated fats can be, too, but then you say he is only eating highly processed meat. There are not many polyunsaturated or trans fats in bacon (…smokies…not sure what that is). So you are saying he eats a lot of bad fats, but then your example has very few. If he is only eating 500-600 calories a day, he would be in not-so-great shape longterm. I did that as a Newcastle n=1 experiment for 10 weeks. I lost 35 pounds in those 10 weeks. How long has he been eating 600 calories a day?
