Is losing too fast bad?

(The amazing autoimmune 🦄) #1

I have been doing keto for about ten days now and have lost about 30 pounds. I know that it is probably all water weight and I am expecting that it will slow down. I am concerned about if losing this fast can cause problems? I have been really careful about drinking lots of water, but I have also been swooshing for ten days.

Can this cause problems if so what can be done to prevent them?

FYI female who weighed 406.

Thanks for any advice

I’m sure you appreciate the heavier you are at the starting point, the larger the potential loss. What might help is considering it as a percentage of your body weight

To compare mine (male mid 40s), I was approx 280lb in early June 2018, now approx 212lb. So I’ve lost approx 24% of my starting body weight in approx 120 days. However like you I lost proportionally more in the first 2 weeks, it slowed, then picked up again

If you feel good, maintaining your electrolytes and sticking to macro targets keep going! I’d guess you weight loss will slow down as you hit the classic keto plateau

Not a seasoned pro, but as a similarly sized person fairly new to this WOL I think I can offer some advice…

I was 6’2 495 at the start in June. Switched to keto and immediately lost 21 lbs in 7 days. So, yes, for people with a lot to lose there is often a big drop in water weight at first. Since then the weight loss has come “slower” but has averaged about 3-4 lbs per week for me. I expect the lower my weight gets the harder it’ll be to lose a pound.

The best advice you’ll get in here is to do your thing, keep calm and keto on! It works. Be patient and stay the course. By the way, if you haven’t started electrolytes, start. You’re flushing them out of you like crazy.

No. With this WOE there is no “too fast”

Thanks, I hadn’t thought of it as a percentage.

I hope I can follow in your footsteps. For too long I thought losing weight was impossible.

This way of eating is the only one I’ve researched where I’ve seen women and men able to do equally well. There are a number of women in these forums have blown me away with their progress.

Obviously not everyone has comparable results in terms of lbs/week, but it appears most people can lose doing this. Just remember: People like us have more to do than lose lbs. We have unhealthy behaviors, sick bodies, and backwards thinking that needs fixing. Be patient.
