Is Keto Healing My Allergies

(Paige) #1

I’ve had allergies for a very long time due to pollen, my cat and mold and my nose stuffs up so bad that I can’t breath. The only thing that helps me is steroid type of nasal spray(Flonase) which I have to use everyday and cannot live without. Ever since I became keto around a year ago I noticed that I don’t have to use my nasal spray so often, sometimes I can last for weeks. I live in the same environment so is keto healing my allergies?

I’ve noticed a HUGE improvement in myself after going keto… My hayfever was getting progressively worse over the last 10-15 years.
From Week 2 on keto I’ve had NOTHING!!!
Even slashing weeds on my property (which used to really set me off) has no effect at all now!
I asked my cousin how his allergies have been since keto (he always carried a handkerchief and would have huge sneezing fits) and he said It’s non existent!
People have been complaining about their hayfever all around me and I’m like "yeah, I used to have hayfever"
Just another benefit clocked up to keto really…

My pollen allergy is also nearly gone. I take allegra, flonase, and zatador (an eye drop) daily and would normally still be suffering. Been on keto for a month and a half and I am experiencing no symptoms despite the extremely high pollen count here in South Carolina. A MONTH AND A HALF!
It’s incredible. I wish I had know years ago.

It does me, the more carbs (sugar) the more bacteria for sinus infection to flourish

Interestingly it may suggest that allergies are related to the levels of inflammation in the body which above a certain level may enable specific allergic reactions. It seems to work on quite a lot of instances of auto-immune problems (RA, SA, etc.). Or it could be hormonal changes? Or gut biome changes? So many improvements, so much magic…

It would be interesting to see what specific allergic reactions are mitigated by keto. Some researcher should then work back from that with a knowledge of the biological effects of keto and work out the pathways to manage allergies?

I used to get bronchiitis once to three times a year. I changed my diet and i cut that down to 0-1 time per year. The doc explained that with the higher sugar that it created a better environment for bacteria to grows allowing for infection. I still get allergies but now they are hardly noticeable. The runny nose ect have been non existent. If i get bronchitis it is much less impacting and easier to get over.

I am waiting to see if it has helped as well but I think it has. I am allergic to cats and mine passed away last year - which use to be a huge trigger. Spring with pollen etc is another. It is just warming up now in Canada so we will see! I haven’t had to take anything for dust etc though in a long time!

I used to get bacterial infections (sinus, ear, bronchitis, etc.) at every season change. Since I started keto two years ago, I have not had any illness. I have also removed dairy from my diet as well.

Most foods that cause autoimmune disorders are cut out of a ketogenic diet. In a lot of ways keto, follows the protocal of most elimination diets. High insulin is inflammation and ketones are anti-inflammatory as well. Keto will improve gut health stopping harmful highly reactive by-products from being passed into the blood.

(Paige) #10

Never thought that sugar played a part in allergies good to know.

My experience was similar. Growing up, I could never breathe through my nose. I knew it was autoimmune because it was temporarily alleviated by corticosteroids. Once eating lipolitically all the inflammation disappeared, as well as the periodic lung issues.

Keto isn’t helping my allergies at all. Which makes me face the sad fact that for me, dairy is probably the culprit. I have been trying to cut it out but I love it so much. I have cut down a lot but I think I need to be more drastic if it’s going to help my allergies. I switched yesterday to green tea (from coffee with too much cream), so it’s a start!

But I have noticed I get sick less often. I caught a cold around Xmas and it was not that bad and only lasted three days - and I’m someone who usually gets those epic colds that last three weeks and turn into bronchitis.

Oh, and I was surprised to find out that Stevia can cause allergies in people who are sensitive to ragweed (same plant family). I threw mine out and switched to erithrytol.

Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I got allergies/sick/a cold, and I contribute my superhuman immunities to this WOE. :metal:

I’ve been keto for a year now and it took a while before I noticed anything around 8 months and it was so gradual. Sorry it’s not going away for you but along your journey you might find other things that improves.

(Lee) #15

Thanks Fatcat; I’ve been doing keto for over a year. I’m quite sure my issue is dairy. I’m lactose intolerant but in denial about it!

(Brian Huffman) #16

You are likely casein intolerant as well. When I started keto I eliminated dairy. After the first three months i did a tolerance Test on standard cow milk. I had a severe headache for three days. A few weeks later I tried again, same result. After reading further,I tried A2 milk. I did not get a headache this time, however I did have stuffiness and a full feeling in my ears. I tried the goat milk and other options as well.

In the end, I am completely dairy free (even butter). I now use cacao butter, coconut and avocados to make fatty treats.

My allergies and asthma both decreased (and are basically gone) - I haven’t used meds for either in more than a year. My allergies disappeared before I was keto but while I was on a very liberal LCHF diet (I started with Dr. Ludwig’s diet). I mention this because for me, being keto is not required to see this amazing benefit.

(Tialda) #18

Same for me! I always had a stuffy nose and would panic if I didn’t have a nose spray on me. But since day 2 on Keto it has cleared up, crazy fast effect!

(Paige) #19

Yup I panicked if I didn’t have my nose spray too! Isn’t it great not depending on it anymore.

It healed mine. It’s awesome. I think it’s partly to do with the underlying inflammation being gone, so reactions aren’t as severely felt.
