Try getting them to drink sodas with erythritol or stevia leaf extracts in them. A co-worker drinks a brand that he picks up at Wal-Mart. They are more expensive that regular sodas but are 100% natural. For what it’s worth, I was a very heavy soda drinker (12 pack+/day) for 30 years. I switched to diet in 2014 and 3 weeks ago I started drinking 1-2 cans of Zevia a day. Other than that, it’s straight water. If you can get them to stop drinking soda for 2 weeks, they can change their intake of it dramatically.
Is diet soda okay on a ketogenic diet?
For a treat, I go with Arrowhead sparkling spring water, orange flavor. (wally world carries it, $.78 per liter, so while it still galls me to pay anything for liquid refreshment, it’s a pretty cheap treat.) It’s unsweetened seltzer and “natural flavors”, 0 calories. Not quite sure what the natural flavors are, it’s not organic, but it’s my “cheat” and I deal with that. I basically don’t eat any sweet foods or artificial sweeteners, so this actually tastes slightly sweet to me, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t taste that way to most people.
Some of them actually taste too sweet to me but they are a nice treat. My favorite is La Croix Peach-pear flavor.
One week tomorrow and no soda, diet or otherwise, has passed my husband’s and son’s lips. (They are probably doing it to shut me up! I am perfectly capable of being annoying, at times ) Next, the tortillas?
I will reiterate many good points made here. After a lifelong Diet Coke / Diet Dr. Pepper addiction, I gave it up 3 months ago based on the following ideas:
- Artificial sweeteners spike insulin in the absence of sugar, which increases:
- hunger and cravings, and:
- fat storage
- Studies show diet soda is not associated with weight loss
In my case, it helped me break a weight loss stall
As long as you are staying in ketosis you are on a ketogenic diet, usually requires under 20g of carbs (but sometimes 50g), sufficient protein (lord knows how much that is) and fat for energy (give or take some body fat)… everything else is individual. He might find it problematic later but there is no hard and fast rule stopping him.
Water!! And my husband is doing some weird tea made out of leaves. I think he said avocado?
Well that sounded weird. I guess all tea is made from leaves, huh? Anyway the tea is bright red. I’m too chicken to try it.
I’ve heard Dr. Nally say it twice on two different podcasts now, that he no longer approves of aspartame after finding out that (and I may have the explanation wrong, please listen to Keto Talk and LLVLC for yourselves to get it straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak) aspartame makes your gut bugs less likely to produce butyric acid, and that would keep your ketones low. He said it took over three months off the diet soda before his ketones jumped to numbers he’d never seen before.
I keep trying, but diet coke is freakin’ addictive, man!
Yes, I keep falling off the wagon and drinking it. Although, I will admit, I have cut way back. I’ve been having it about twice a week instead of daily.
I have been drinking Bai as a replacement. That uses stevia and erythritol. Better? I’m not sure but at least Bai has some nutrients and doesn’t make me urinate as much as Diet Coke. I’ve also been drinking a lot more iced tea. That helps, too.
Summary. If you are just starting out, it may make the transition easier, but it is really not considered healthy. Artificial sweeteners may spike insulin and could affect your gut microbes.
With that said I occasionally succumb to the occasional diet soda, I go “all in” and get a diet mountain dew! So, to try and make my fasting days easier (and save the planet of plastic), I just got a soda stream. I ordered some organic flavors online that don’t have sweeteners. So I guess it’s similar to flavored seltzer. I’m enjoying it. Fasting today, I think I’ll got make a seltzer!
Check out Zevia. It’s the only soda I drink. Entirely stevia sweetened, no artificial colors, sweeteners or or additives. More expensive than conventional soda, but not too bad (usually in the neighborhood of $5 for a 6-pack). You can generally find it at places like Whole Foods, your local health food store or even the natural section of a conventional grocery store. Amazon also sells it in bulk & that usually works out to be a bit cheaper per can.
I have been on this WOE 2 Keto Dudes style since March 17th, I hit a stall for at least one month, I was not entirely frustrating, because I also was having non-scale victories. And while I totally trust this process I had been stubborn and unwilling to give up my addiction to Coke Zero. And then when I noticed no changes in the weight, and no changes in the way my clothing fit, I decided to give it a try for my body… one month, no Coke Zero. July 5-17 I have busted the stall out, and lost 6 pounds. So, for me… I say that Diet Soda may cause some type of biochemical issue that may keep us from reaching goal weight. Bummer!!!
I haven’t had a real sugared soft drink since they invented Diet Rite and Tab. But in my case diet soda has never affected my ability to stay in ketosis or lose by cutting carbs one iota.
This my personal experience. Some folks may be different.
