Is a carb a carb?

#1

I’m relatively new to the Keto lifestyle and still learning for sure.

I have been eating zero or nearly zero added sugars.

I found a brand of almonds that I really like the flavor of, Bold Habanero BBQ from Blue Diamond which have 2g of sugar per serving and 2 net carbs.

From a Keto perspective, does my body know difference in 2g carbs from sugar v 2g carbs from broccoli? Would this be an okay food to incorporate?

Calories 170 Sodium 100 mg
Total Fat 15 g Potassium 180 mg
Saturated 1 g Total Carbs 5 g
Polyunsaturated 4 g Dietary Fiber 3 g
Monounsaturated 10 g Sugars 2 g
Trans 0 g Protein 6 g
Cholesterol 0 mg
Vitamin A 0% Calcium 8%
Vitamin C 0% Iron 6%

Yes, it absolutely does, partly because sugar contains 50 percent fructose, which is the uber-devil in terms of insulin response. This is why we preach the “eat whole foods” mantra so vociferously. because eating empty carbs (like sugar in sauces) gives you no nutritional benefit.

A carb is no more a carb than a calorie is a calorie, which is why the whole “if it fits your macros” idea is so often used to justify complete stupidity (I’m looking at YOU, r/ketoaustralia!).

The answer is YMMV :face_with_monocle::thinking:

Lets compare the Bold Habanero BBQ with the Roasted Salted.

Bold Habanero BBQ - 15g fat and 5 carbs(2 sugar) 6g protein 170 cal
Roasted Salted - 16g fat and 5 carbs(1 sugar) 6g protein 170 cal

Bold Habanero BBQ - 1g added sugar/molasses 2 net carbs
Roasted Salted. - no added sugar 2 net carbs

See what they did! They use small serving sizes to monkey around with the numbers :scream:

If you eat them as part of IF (restricted eating window) you shouldn’t have a problem but if you snack on them throughout the day you will have problems.

Low Carb /Moderate Protein /High Fat is more than Macros it’s about Insulin Management with low Insulinogenic foods.

Here is some information I found useful :grinning:

Here’s a blog I found interesting :face_with_monocle::thinking:

I enjoy sharing my thoughts if you get something out of it ok if not that’s ok too :grinning:

Please remember YMMV :thinking:

Good luck and much success in your journey in IF/EF Keto WOE :grin:

Ths is fine, just be aware of your day’s carbs.

I pressed Dr. Westman on this question, as my bias strongly suggested they aren’t the same. It’s his years of experience, and thousands of patients, that they, in total, are the same.

A year after this discussion, and my living LCHF, I know see where he’s coming from.

Which is why I count total, and not net carbs.
